Zapier has shipped Inline Formulas, a feature that removes one of the platform's most persistent friction points: the need to add separate Formatter steps for basic data transformations.
The feature allows users to apply formulas directly inside field mappings, where they were already working. Trim whitespace, convert to lowercase, extract text patterns, or set fallback values without leaving the action step. Previously, each of these operations required its own dedicated Formatter step, adding both complexity and task count to workflows.
How It Works
When mapping a field in any action step, users can now click a formula icon to access transformation options. The formula is applied inline, exactly where the data will be used, rather than in a separate preprocessing step.
This isn't a complete replacement for the Formatter tool. Complex multi-step transformations or operations that need to output multiple values still require dedicated steps. But for the routine data cleaning that appears in nearly every workflow, the improvement is significant.
Why This Matters
The change reflects how professional automation builders actually work. Data rarely arrives in exactly the format needed. Email addresses come with extra spaces. Names need consistent capitalization. Empty fields need defaults. Each of these micro-transformations used to inflate workflow complexity.
For teams managing dozens or hundreds of automations, removing even a single step per workflow compounds quickly. Fewer steps mean faster execution, simpler debugging, and lower cognitive overhead when reviewing workflows months later.
The feature also matters for workflow readability. When a transformation happens inline, the relationship between input and output is clearer. No need to trace back through previous steps to understand why a field was modified.
Broader Context
Zapier has been steadily addressing usability issues that affect power users. Earlier this year, the company launched Copilot, which generates multi-step workflows from natural language prompts. The tool demonstrated that Zapier understands where friction exists in workflow creation, not just execution.
Inline Formulas fits the same pattern. It solves a problem that only becomes apparent after building dozens of automations. New users might not notice the inefficiency of multiple Formatter steps. Experienced users feel it constantly.
The feature is available now to all Zapier users. Access it by clicking the formula icon when mapping any field in an action step.
