Zapier Moves Agents Into AI by Zapier

AI by Zapier now contains the tool calling, reasoning and autonomous action previously offered through Zapier Agents. Builders can add those capabilities as a single AI step inside the Zap editor, rather than creating a separate agent outside the main platform.

According to the Zapier blog post, the former Agents product combined four ingredients: a prompt, tools, a trigger and permission to act. The same ingredients now run within a Zap, alongside Zapier’s filters, paths and run history.

That also changes the available triggers. An agent can now start from any of Zapier’s 9,000+ app integrations, rather than the smaller trigger selection available in Agents.

How AI by Zapier Replaces Agents

Existing Agents features have direct equivalents in the Zap editor:

Zapier Agents featureNew location
Agent instructionsPrompt field in the AI by Zapier step
Agent toolsTools picker in the AI by Zapier step
Schedule or webhook triggerZap trigger
Chat or on-demand agentWebhook trigger
One agent calling anotherSub-Zap by Zapier as the child Zap’s trigger
Human interventionRequire approval before running, configured per tool

The tools picker can contain as many tools as the job needs. This lets the AI step reason about a request, choose a configured tool and take action within the wider workflow.

Moving an existing agent means recreating its instructions in the prompt field, selecting its tools and moving its starting event to the Zap trigger. Workflows where one agent called another can instead use a Sub-Zap, with Sub-Zap by Zapier acting as the trigger for the child Zap.

Approvals Now Work Per Tool

Zapier Agents used an all-or-nothing approval setting. AI by Zapier lets builders set Require approval before running separately for each tool.

An AI step could therefore run read-only tools automatically while pausing before a tool sends, updates or deletes something. The approval setting sits with the individual tool rather than applying one rule across the whole agent.

The consolidation also puts agent activity into the same automation infrastructure that executes Zapier tasks. Builders can inspect runs and combine the AI step with the platform’s existing filters and conditional paths instead of keeping agent logic in a separate product.

Tanya Van Gastel presents the APEX framework for making products discoverable in AI-powered search engines like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews. She explains how AI is fundamentally changing product discovery and buyer behavior, then breaks down five critical components: Authority (being cited as a solution), Presence (visibility across search platforms), Expertise (creating high-quality money pages), Endorsements (off-site validation), and Extractability (making content easy for AI to process). The talk emphasizes quality over quantity, with data showing 50% of SaaS SEO revenue comes from fewer than 10 high-performing pages.
