Vercel Adds Custom Monitors to Observability

Vercel custom monitors can now turn Observability query results into alerts. Builders can track AI Gateway costs, Core Web Vitals, performance metrics, Workflow failures, external API failure rates and Sandbox CPU time.

According to the Vercel changelog, each monitor watches either one metric or a ratio between two metrics. A single-metric monitor could track response time. A ratio could measure errors divided by total requests.

How Vercel custom monitors work

Builders can choose between statistical anomaly detection and a fixed threshold. They can then configure the detection window, add filters and group the results.

OptionWhat it monitorsExample
Single metricOne value from a queryResponse time
Metric ratioOne metric divided by anotherErrors divided by total requests
Statistical anomalyBehaviour outside the expected rangeAn unusual change in a tracked signal
Fixed thresholdA value crossing a set limitA failure rate passing its configured threshold

A monitor can start from an existing Observability chart. Builders inspect the chart’s query and create the alert from there. Vercel also provides presets, while team administrators can create monitors under Settings > Alerts.

For terminal-based workflows, monitors can be added with the vercel monitors add CLI command.

Alerts can reach the tools your team checks

When a monitor detects the configured condition, Vercel can send the alert by email, Vercel Inbox or push notification. Teams can also route alerts to Slack or use team-level webhooks to pass them into another system.

That gives teams several ways to connect application signals to an existing incident or operations process. The same monitoring setup can cover frontend performance, external services, AI spend and compute usage, depending on the underlying Observability query.

Frequently asked questions

What are Vercel custom monitors?

Custom monitors are alerts built from Vercel Observability queries. Each one tracks a single metric or a ratio of two metrics using statistical anomaly detection or a fixed threshold.

How do you create a custom monitor?

You can inspect a chart’s query in Observability, begin with a preset or open Settings > Alerts for your team. You can also create one from the CLI with vercel monitors add.

Which Vercel plan includes custom monitors?

The announcement does not state which plans include custom monitors or whether additional pricing applies. It confirms that monitors can be configured for a team through its alert settings.
