Supabase Ships TanStack DB Connector, MongoDB Foreign Data Wrapper, and OpenCode Integration

Supabase Expands Data Integration With Three Major Updates

Supabase announced on LinkedIn this week that it shipped several product updates in the past month, including a new TanStack DB connector, a MongoDB foreign data wrapper, and an integration with OpenCode for agentic database management. The open-source Firebase alternative continues to expand its ecosystem of developer tools with a focus on real-time data synchronization and cross-platform interoperability.

The updates follow Supabase's recent launch of the TanStack DB adapter, which enables live queries and real-time sync between Supabase databases and React applications. The company also recently introduced OpenCode integration to allow AI agents to manage database operations directly.

TanStack DB Connector Adds Real-Time Sync

The TanStack DB connector links Supabase's Postgres backend with TanStack Query, a popular data-fetching library for React applications. According to the official changelog, the connector supports live queries that automatically update when underlying database records change, eliminating the need for manual polling or complex WebSocket implementations.

Developers can now bind TanStack Query hooks directly to Supabase Realtime channels, enabling component state to reflect database mutations in near real-time. This approach reduces boilerplate code for common patterns like dashboard widgets, collaborative editing interfaces, and activity feeds where multiple users need synchronized views of the same data.

MongoDB Foreign Data Wrapper Bridges NoSQL and Postgres

The MongoDB foreign data wrapper lets Supabase projects query MongoDB collections as if they were native Postgres tables. Built on Postgres's foreign data wrapper (FDW) interface, the integration allows developers to run SQL queries against MongoDB data without migrating or duplicating records.

This capability addresses a common pain point in polyglot persistence architectures where applications use both relational and document databases. Teams can now join MongoDB collections with Postgres tables in a single query, perform aggregations across data sources, or gradually migrate NoSQL workloads to Postgres without downtime. The wrapper translates SQL operations into MongoDB queries behind the scenes, handling type conversions and query optimization automatically.

OpenCode Integration Enables AI-Driven Database Work

The OpenCode integration, first detailed in a June blog post, connects AI coding agents directly to Supabase databases, Edge Functions, and application logs. OpenCode handles the Model Context Protocol (MCP) configuration required for agents to safely read schema information, execute queries, and deploy serverless functions without manual credential management.

This tooling supports agentic workflows where AI assistants draft database migrations, write query logic, or debug performance issues by inspecting real-time logs. The integration includes guardrails to prevent destructive operations and maintains an audit trail of all agent actions. Developers retain final approval over schema changes and function deployments while offloading routine tasks to autonomous agents.

Additional Updates and TypeScript Requirement Change

Supabase also announced that @supabase/supabase-js will require TypeScript 5.0 or later starting in January 2027. The current SDK supports TypeScript 4.7, which shipped in May 2022, but the newer requirement will allow the team to adopt modern type features including const type parameters and the satisfies operator.

The company emphasized that this change follows its existing support policy, where raising minimum dependency versions ships in minor releases rather than major breaking changes. Projects still using TypeScript 4.7 through 4.9 should upgrade before the January cutoff to avoid compatibility issues.

Other recent updates include searchable field-level encryption through a partnership with CipherStash, which allows teams to encrypt sensitive columns while preserving query functionality. The partnership addresses compliance requirements for healthcare, finance, and other regulated industries where data must remain encrypted at rest and in transit.
