Notion has shipped an AI-powered self-review writer that drafts performance reviews by pulling context from employees' documents, Slack messages, and project pages. The tool, built into Notion's AI assistant and internally nicknamed "Nosy," formats reviews to match company templates and helped employees complete self-reviews in roughly 30 minutes during a recent performance cycle.
Brittany Ramos, who leads performance cycle enablement at Notion, announced the tool on LinkedIn following the company's latest review cycle, which gave employees just 72 hours to complete their self-assessments. According to Ramos, one employee finished in 20 minutes, a first in her four years running performance enablement. Another colleague recovering from surgery used the tool to meet the deadline without compromising quality.
Built During Focus Week
The self-review writer emerged from Notion's quarterly Focus Week, a dedicated sprint for deep work. The People team ran an AI Lab during the event and identified missing functionality for automating review drafts. Ramos reached out to engineer Luca Beetz, and the team quickly built the solution. The tool integrates with Notion's existing infrastructure to access relevant work artifacts and generate first drafts that employees refine before submission.
Notion has been expanding its AI capabilities rapidly. The company recently launched Custom Agents, which handle multi-step workflows autonomously, and added usage controls and analytics for enterprise teams. The self-review writer appears to be an internal application of this broader agent infrastructure, though it was developed by the People team rather than rolled out as a standard product feature.
Ramos estimates the tool saved roughly 4,290 minutes per person by eliminating the manual work of compiling achievements, finding supporting evidence, and formatting responses. The solution spread organically within Notion, with engineers requesting the prompt and colleagues sharing results across Slack channels.
Customer Zero Approach
The development process reflects what Ramos calls being "customer zero," where internal teams build directly into the tools employees already use rather than creating separate training or systems. This shifts the People function from scheduling training sessions to designing solutions embedded in daily workflows.
The self-review writer joins other workflow automation tools Notion has shipped recently, including email management capabilities for drafting and organizing inbox tasks. The company positions these as part of its broader AI team vision, where agents handle repetitive work while employees focus on higher-value tasks.
Ramos credits Saya I., Mariama Eghan, Ellie Busmire, and Luca Beetz for collaborating on the project. She invited People leaders interested in building similar tools to connect directly. The rapid deployment timeline and high adoption rate suggest internal AI tools may proliferate as companies look to reduce administrative overhead for HR processes like performance management, onboarding, and compliance workflows.
