Lovable Introduces Skills Feature to Save and Automate Repeated Development Instructions

Lovable has introduced skills, a new feature that lets users create reusable sets of instructions once and have the platform apply them automatically when relevant.

The update, announced on LinkedIn on May 18, is designed to eliminate repetitive instruction-giving for teams that follow consistent processes. Skills can capture design workflows, tone-of-voice guidelines, QA checklists, or any other repeatable process that a team uses across builds.

Creating and Managing Skills

Users can create a skill by simply asking Lovable to make one through the chat interface. Once created, skills can be edited and managed in the settings panel. The platform ships with five built-in skills that users can test immediately, and specific skills can be invoked using the / command within a conversation.

The feature addresses a common pain point in AI-assisted development: having to repeatedly explain the same preferences, standards, or procedures each time you start a new project or conversation thread. According to Lovable's blog post, skills are saved as markdown files, making them portable and version-controllable.

Automating Team Standards

The automatic application of skills differentiates this feature from simple prompt templates or saved instructions. When Lovable detects that a skill is relevant to the current task, it applies those instructions without requiring the user to explicitly invoke them. This positions skills as a way to bake team standards and institutional knowledge directly into the development workflow.

Common use cases include:

  • Design systems: Enforce spacing, color palettes, typography, and component patterns
  • Code quality: Apply specific linting rules, naming conventions, or testing requirements
  • Content tone: Maintain consistent voice and style across user-facing text
  • Security checks: Ensure authentication flows, input validation, or data handling meet standards

The feature arrives as Lovable continues expanding its capabilities as an AI development platform. The company recently introduced Google connectors for Gmail, Drive, Sheets, and other services, and added SEO and AI search tools for optimizing built applications for discoverability.

Skills in the Broader AI Dev Tool Landscape

Lovable's skills join a growing set of personalization and automation features across AI coding tools. Cursor offers .cursorrules files for project-specific instructions, Windsurf has Cascade rules, and Replit allows agents to reference documentation and style guides.

What distinguishes Lovable's approach is the automatic detection and application layer. Rather than relying on users to remember to include a rules file or invoke a specific prompt, skills aim to become invisible scaffolding that guides the AI without constant manual intervention.

For teams building multiple projects with shared standards or solo builders who want to maintain consistency across iterations, skills offer a way to codify best practices once and let the platform handle the enforcement. The feature is available now to all Lovable users.

AI Lets You Build Everything—Here’s Why You Still Never Launch

Tom Wesolowski, owner of NoCodeRefactoring.com, delivers a conference talk exposing how AI's ability to build anything has created a new problem: chronic overbuilding that prevents launches. Using a real marketplace project as a case study, he demonstrates how an 80% scope reduction transformed a stalled four-month development into a revenue-generating product launched in two weeks. The talk provides a practical framework for identifying the minimal viable customer loop and postponing everything else until real user demand validates the need.
