OpenAI released three custom GPTs designed for families and children this holiday season, created in partnership with NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command known for its annual Santa Tracker.
The custom GPTs, announced on LinkedIn, offer three distinct holiday-themed experiences: Elf Enrollment transforms photos into official Santa's helper portraits, Toy Lab converts children's toy ideas into printable coloring pages, and Story Creator generates personalized holiday tales. Each GPT is freely accessible through direct links on the ChatGPT platform.
Turning Children's Creativity Into Keepsakes
The partnership marks an unusual collaboration between OpenAI and a government defense organization, though NORAD has maintained a public-facing holiday tradition since 1955 when a misprinted Sears advertisement led children to call the Continental Air Defense Command asking for Santa's location.
Elf Enrollment appears designed as a photo transformation tool, creating stylized portraits that position subjects as part of Santa's workshop team. The feature likely uses image generation capabilities similar to those in ChatGPT's DALL-E integration, though OpenAI has not detailed the specific models powering these custom GPTs.
Toy Lab addresses a common scenario during the holidays: children describing elaborate toy concepts that don't exist in stores. By converting these descriptions into coloring pages, the GPT gives kids a tangible output they can color and keep, even if the actual toy remains imaginary. This approach sidesteps manufacturing complexity while still validating children's creative ideas.
Story Creator rounds out the trio by generating custom narratives, presumably incorporating details families provide about characters, settings, or plot elements. Custom story generation has become a popular application for large language models, with several startups building entire products around personalized children's books.
Limited-Time Holiday Offering
OpenAI positioned all three GPTs as time-sensitive releases "just in time for the holidays," though the company did not specify an end date for availability. Custom GPTs remain accessible only to ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise subscribers, though OpenAI has occasionally made select GPTs available to free users during promotional periods.
The release follows OpenAI's broader push into practical, domain-specific applications of its technology. The company recently launched a shopping research feature with unlimited holiday access and added Mac automation and task memory to its desktop app.
The NORAD collaboration represents a departure from OpenAI's typical enterprise and developer-focused announcements. Rather than targeting businesses or researchers, these GPTs aim squarely at families with young children, a demographic OpenAI has not historically emphasized in its marketing.
Whether the custom GPTs will remain available after the holiday season or evolve into permanent fixtures in ChatGPT's GPT Store remains unclear. OpenAI did not respond to questions about the partnership's duration or future plans for family-oriented AI tools.
