ChatGPT dots are always-on agents that can work across more than 4,000 connected apps, run tasks in the background and start work before a user asks.

Powered by GPT-6 Astra, each dot gets its own cloud computer. It can handle a defined task such as booking a table, or take on broader work with what OpenAI describes as the initiative of an engineer or chief of staff.

According to the LinkedIn announcement, dots will be available through ChatGPT on web, mobile and desktop. Access covers Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise users in eligible markets.

How ChatGPT dots change the way work starts

The main change is initiative. A normal request begins when the user asks for something. A dot can learn what the user needs, start before being prompted and continue working in the background.

That moves ChatGPT from a place where a user opens a conversation into an environment where a configured agent keeps operating. The dot can use the plugins connected to ChatGPT to move between apps and complete work on its own cloud computer.

The scope can be narrow or broad. OpenAI gives booking a table as its simple example. At the other end, it describes dots taking on ambitious work with the initiative of a high-agency engineer or chief of staff.

GPT-6 Astra supplies the underlying model. The model has also appeared across several products covered in our GPT-6 Astra platform roundup. With dots, Astra is being used for persistent agents rather than a single specialist workflow.

Boundaries determine what dots can do

Users choose which apps to connect. They can then set boundaries covering three kinds of behaviour: actions the dot may take independently, actions that require approval and actions it must never take.

These controls sit alongside the separate cloud computer. A user does not have to connect their own computer for the dot to operate, although doing so remains optional.

That configuration creates a practical distinction between access and authority. Connecting a plugin gives the dot access to an app. The boundaries specify which actions it can take inside the connected setup without returning for permission.

For a workflow containing bookings, records or communications, the user can decide where the agent continues alone and where it pauses. The same dot can therefore have different rules for different actions, based on the boundaries its owner sets.

Setting up a dot in ChatGPT

The first dot can be created from the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser. The setup begins by creating the dot, connecting the required apps and allowing it to introduce itself.

  1. 1

    Create the dot

start in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser

  2. 2

    Connect the apps

choose the plugins the dot needs for its work

  3. 3

    Set the boundaries

define what it can do, when it must ask and what it must never do

  4. 4

    Meet the dot

let the agent introduce itself before it starts working

Once configured, the dot can operate through ChatGPT on web, mobile and desktop. Its work is not tied to the user's own machine because it runs from its dedicated cloud computer.

The launch also extends the role of Business Premium, which was introduced for leaner teams through ChatGPT Business Premium seats. Alongside Pro and Enterprise, that plan is named as one of the access tiers for dots.

Frequently asked questions

What are ChatGPT dots?

dots are always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra. They have their own cloud computers, work across connected apps and can continue tasks in the background before a user asks.

Which ChatGPT plans include dots?

dots will be available to Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise users. Access is limited to eligible markets.

How do dots compare with regular ChatGPT requests?

A regular request starts when the user asks ChatGPT to do something. A dot can learn what the user needs, begin work before being asked and continue operating in the background under predefined boundaries.

When are ChatGPT dots available?

OpenAI says dots will be available through ChatGPT on web, mobile and desktop. Users create their first dot through the desktop app or a desktop browser.

How to Get Your Product Recommended by Google and ChatGPT

Tanya Van Gastel presents the APEX framework for making products discoverable in AI-powered search engines like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews. She explains how AI is fundamentally changing product discovery and buyer behavior, then breaks down five critical components: Authority (being cited as a solution), Presence (visibility across search platforms), Expertise (creating high-quality money pages), Endorsements (off-site validation), and Extractability (making content easy for AI to process). The talk emphasizes quality over quantity, with data showing 50% of SaaS SEO revenue comes from fewer than 10 high-performing pages.

The AI-Native Solopreneur: Build Without a Technical Co-Founder

Effie Bersoux presents a paradigm shift in entrepreneurship where AI enables solo founders to build, validate, and scale businesses without technical co-founders or significant capital. Drawing from Growth Girls' experience building 40+ companies in one year and going from a £4m exit (7 years) to a £40m acquisition target (1 year), she demonstrates how AI breaks the traditional capital-talent-traction loop that disadvantages undercapitalized founders. The talk provides concrete frameworks for AI-native operating models, automation decision-making, and rapid idea-to-market validation.
