ChatGPT Brings AI Skills and Apps to Excel in Beta Launch

OpenAI announced on LinkedIn that ChatGPT skills and apps are now available directly in Excel, currently in beta. The integration brings AI-powered workflow automation to spreadsheet users, starting with two finance-specific skills designed to make budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling more consistent and contextual.

The move extends ChatGPT's reach into Microsoft's productivity suite, targeting finance professionals who spend significant time building and maintaining complex spreadsheets. Rather than simply answering questions, the integration allows ChatGPT to execute repeatable instructions and pull in data from connected sources.

Finance-First Approach

OpenAI is launching with two default skills. The Corporate Finance / FP&A Spreadsheet Skill handles budgets, forecasts, and KPI packs. The Financial Modeling Skill tackles three-statement models, discounted cash flow analyses, leveraged buyouts, and comparable company analyses. Both skills aim to improve formatting consistency and produce outputs that align with established finance workflows.

The distinction between skills and apps matters. Skills provide structured instructions for how work should be completed, essentially templates for common financial tasks. Apps connect external data sources, allowing users to bring in trusted information without leaving Excel. This architecture separates process logic from data integration, giving organizations control over both workflow standards and data access.

Direct Formula Generation

ChatGPT for Excel can write formulas directly into cells when formulas are the appropriate output format. The system evaluates whether a calculation requires a formula or static value, then generates the appropriate Excel syntax. Added citations help users trace inputs back to their source, addressing a common concern in financial modeling where audit trails are essential.

This capability extends beyond simple formula assistance. The skills can structure entire financial models, applying formatting conventions and calculation hierarchies that match industry standards. For FP&A teams managing monthly forecast cycles or analysts building valuation models, this could reduce the manual setup time for each new workbook.

Beta Access and Rollout

The integration is currently in beta, though OpenAI has not specified eligibility criteria or timeline for broader availability. The LinkedIn announcement suggests the company is targeting enterprise users first, particularly finance departments that already use ChatGPT for other workflows.

The focus on finance skills for the initial launch is strategic. Financial modeling and FP&A work involve highly structured tasks with clear success criteria, making them ideal candidates for AI automation. If these initial skills prove effective, OpenAI will likely expand to other domains where Excel is central: data analysis, project management, operations planning.

For now, finance teams interested in testing the integration should monitor OpenAI's business channels for beta access details. The combination of repeatable skills, connected data sources, and direct formula generation represents a significant step beyond ChatGPT's existing capabilities, potentially reshaping how financial professionals approach spreadsheet-based work.
