Notion Renames Database Agents to Autofill, Adds Two-Tier Structure
Notion has renamed its database agents feature to Autofill, according to a LinkedIn post from the company. The change aims to simplify naming while preserving the AI-powered automation capabilities teams have been using to populate database fields.
The rebranding comes with a two-tier structure. Basic Autofill, included in Business and Enterprise plans, handles quick, single-pass fills for straightforward data population tasks. Custom Agent, the more advanced tier, tackles complex workflows that require workspace context, web search, and multi-step reasoning.
Two Flavors for Different Needs
Basic Autofill serves teams that need reliable, straightforward data population without configuration overhead. It performs one-pass operations to fill database properties based on existing information in a workspace. This tier is bundled into existing Business and Enterprise subscriptions.
Custom Agent handles more demanding scenarios. It can search across workspace content, pull information from the web, and execute multi-step logic to complete complex autofill tasks. This tier represents the evolution of what Notion has been testing in its Custom Agents beta, which the company detailed in a recent blog post.
The distinction mirrors how other productivity platforms have segmented AI features: quick assists for common tasks, advanced agents for specialized workflows. Notion's implementation puts both under one umbrella term, potentially reducing confusion about when to use which tool.
Simplifying Without Sacrificing Power
The "keeping it simple" tagline suggests Notion heard feedback about terminology. Database agents, while technically accurate, may have felt abstract to teams just trying to automate repetitive data entry. Autofill describes the outcome rather than the mechanism.
The company has been steadily expanding its AI capabilities. It recently added usage controls and analytics for Custom Agents and launched an Agent Hall of Fame to showcase real-world agent workflows. The Autofill rebrand positions these features as practical tools rather than experimental technology.
For teams already using database agents, the functionality remains unchanged. The update primarily affects how Notion markets and explains the feature. Existing agents will continue to work under the new Autofill branding.
Notion has not disclosed pricing details for Custom Agent tier access beyond noting that Basic Autofill comes with Business and Enterprise plans. Teams interested in the advanced tier will likely need to contact Notion's sales team or wait for broader availability announcements.
The move comes as Notion competes with Airtable, Google Forms, and other database-centric productivity tools that are also adding AI automation. Clear, intuitive naming could help Notion differentiate its AI features in a crowded market where every platform is racing to ship agents.
