Austin, a Workplace Experience Coordinator at Notion's San Francisco office, recently solved one of the more tedious parts of his job: assigning seats to new hires. Rather than manually coordinating with managers over Slack every two weeks, he built a pair of custom agents using Notion's developer platform that handle the entire seating shuffle automatically.
The automation connects Notion with OfficeSpace and Slack, and according to Austin, it was "honestly super easy to set up." He used plain English to guide Claude Code through the process, splitting the workflow between two agents that work in sequence.
How the Automation Works
The first agent monitors Notion's "New Hire" database. When a new name appears, it posts to Slack and asks managers where the employee should sit. The second agent reads the Slack replies and calls OfficeSpace to assign the seat. The entire process runs without manual intervention.
Austin described the old workflow as repetitive and time-consuming: spinning up a new Slack channel for each onboarding cycle, handling requests one at a time, and going back and forth with managers. Now he sends one message in Slack, and the agents handle the rest.
Notion introduced its developer platform to give teams new building blocks for extending what's possible in the workspace. The platform includes Workers for syncing external data sources and custom tools that agents can use to generate assets, query live data, or hit any API. The platform runs on Notion's CLI and supports TypeScript, making it accessible to non-engineers who can use AI coding assistants to build functional automations.

Austin, who describes himself as "no engineer," emphasized that the automation saves him hours every onboarding cycle. "It definitely made my life a lot better," he said.
Notion has been showcasing internal and customer use cases for its custom agents in recent months, including automated market intelligence workflows and teams building dozens of agents with small engineering teams. The company also recently added Claude Fable 5 to support more complex, multi-step workflows.
The seating automation is a straightforward example of how custom agents can remove friction from repetitive operational tasks. Austin's workflow doesn't require complex logic or integrations with dozens of tools. It connects three systems, watches for a trigger, asks a question, and acts on the response. The value comes from eliminating the manual coordination loop that previously ate up hours of his time.
Notion's developer platform is designed to make these kinds of automations accessible to teams without dedicated engineering resources. Workers handle continuous syncing of external data into Notion databases using a declarative schema and persistent cursor. Custom tools extend what agents can do inside the workspace, from generating PowerPoint presentations to querying live data from external APIs.
Austin's automation is now part of Notion's internal onboarding process, running quietly in the background every two weeks. For teams managing operational workflows in Notion, it's a template for how small automations can compound into significant time savings.
