Netlify Adds OpenAI GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5 Pro to AI Gateway and Agent Runners

Netlify announced support for OpenAI's GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5 Pro models through its AI Gateway and Agent Runners, eliminating API key management and authentication setup for developers deploying AI-powered applications.

The update allows developers to drop the OpenAI SDK directly into a Netlify Function and ship without configuring credentials or infrastructure. Netlify handles caching, rate limiting, and authentication automatically across all Function types and Agent Runners.

Zero-Configuration Integration

Developers can now use GPT-5.5 models without managing OpenAI API keys. The AI Gateway handles authentication behind the scenes, letting teams focus on building features rather than managing credentials. This follows Netlify's recent addition of GPT-5.5 Instant, which introduced similar zero-config support for OpenAI's faster model.

The implementation works across Netlify's entire function infrastructure. Whether you're deploying serverless functions, edge functions, or using Agent Runners, the same simplified setup applies. No environment variables to set, no secrets to rotate, no authentication flows to build.

Here's what it looks like in practice:

import OpenAI from 'openai';

export default async () => {
  const openai = new OpenAI();
  const response = await openai.chat.completions.create({
    model: 'gpt-5.5',
    messages: [{ role: 'user', content: 'Explain quantum computing' }]
  });
  return Response.json(response);
};

That's the entire implementation. No API key initialization, no error handling for authentication failures, no credential rotation logic.

Built-In Infrastructure

Netlify provides caching, rate limiting, and authentication as platform primitives. These aren't opt-in features or configuration options. They're built into the AI Gateway and active by default.

Caching reduces redundant API calls and lowers costs. Rate limiting prevents runaway usage from a single user or endpoint. Authentication ensures only authorized requests reach OpenAI's models. Developers get production-grade infrastructure without writing a single line of policy code.

The system works identically across development and production environments. Local testing with netlify dev uses the same AI Gateway infrastructure as deployed functions, eliminating the classic "works on my machine" problem with API credentials.

Agent Runners Support

GPT-5.5 availability extends to Netlify's Agent Runners, the platform's environment for deploying AI agents that can execute code, call APIs, and orchestrate multi-step workflows. This aligns with Netlify's broader agent strategy, positioning the platform as infrastructure for both traditional applications and autonomous agent deployments.

Agent Runners handle long-running processes and complex orchestration that doesn't fit serverless function time limits. With GPT-5.5 support, agents can leverage OpenAI's most capable models for reasoning, planning, and decision-making tasks without developers managing separate API integrations.

The timing matters. OpenAI's GPT-5.5 models represent a significant capability jump, particularly for complex reasoning and multi-step problem solving. Making these models accessible through zero-config infrastructure lowers the barrier for developers building agent-based applications.

Netlify detailed the update in their official changelog, emphasizing the platform's approach to eliminating operational overhead for AI application development. The company continues expanding its AI infrastructure following recent launches including Netlify Database and Stripe Projects integration.

Developers can access GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5 Pro immediately through Netlify Functions and Agent Runners. Full documentation is available in the AI Gateway overview.
