Netlify's latest update lands in AI Gateway, giving builders a new way to generate images straight from server-side code. It is aimed at anyone already shipping Netlify Functions who wants image generation without wiring up a separate API key or provider account.

Gemini Nano Banana 2.1 is now available in AI Gateway, so image generation works directly from a Netlify Function with no API keys to configure, as Netlify explained on LinkedIn. The changelog's example Function reads a prompt from the query string, sets aspect ratio and image size in the config, extracts the inline image data from the response, and returns the bytes with the correct content type. Calls also work from Scheduled, Background, and Edge Functions, and they automatically pick up Netlify's caching, rate limiting, and authentication, extending the Gemini support covered in Netlify's recent Gemini 3.8 Flash update.
