Lovable Shifts from Code-Only to General Productivity
Lovable has expanded its platform beyond web app development to tackle a broader range of business tasks. The vibe coding tool, which previously focused on building full-stack applications through chat, now supports video creation, document editing, data analysis, and file manipulation.
Co-founder Henrik Westerlund demonstrated the new capabilities on LinkedIn, showing how users can ask Lovable to create motion graphics videos within minutes. The platform can also analyze, create, and edit PDFs, images, and spreadsheets without requiring manual coding or third-party integrations.
What Users Can Build Now
The update transforms Lovable from a specialized development tool into a general-purpose automation platform. Users can:
- Generate motion graphics videos through natural language prompts
- Analyze data from spreadsheets and produce insights
- Create and edit PDF documents programmatically
- Manipulate images and other file types
- Turn spreadsheets into working applications
These capabilities sit alongside Lovable's existing strength in building web applications, which we've previously covered in depth. The company positions the expansion as making Lovable "your co-founder that can do anything," suggesting a shift toward replacing multiple specialized tools with a single conversational interface.
Competing in a Crowded Space
Lovable's move into general productivity puts it in direct competition with established tools like Glide for spreadsheet-to-app conversion and ChatGPT for document analysis. However, Lovable differentiates by combining these capabilities with its code generation engine, allowing users to build custom interfaces around their data without switching contexts.
The platform already supports integrations with services like Twitch, Twilio, Linear, and Telegram through its connector system, announced in its March 16 changelog. Adding general file manipulation and video creation suggests Lovable is betting that users prefer a unified interface over best-of-breed tools for specific tasks.
Whether this strategy succeeds depends on execution quality. Tools like Replit and Cursor have carved out positions by excelling at specific developer workflows. Lovable's challenge will be maintaining the ease-of-use that attracted non-technical users while adding complexity through broader feature sets.
The update is available now to all Lovable users. The company has not disclosed pricing changes or whether certain features require higher-tier plans.
