Figma Rolls Out Quality-of-Life Improvements to FigJam
Figma has released seven incremental updates to FigJam, its collaborative whiteboarding tool, focused on improving day-to-day workflow friction rather than introducing headline features. The updates, announced on LinkedIn, landed alongside the company's separate MCP launch.
The changes address common pain points in diagram creation and canvas navigation. Table cell merging now works in FigJam, allowing users to combine cells horizontally or vertically for more flexible layouts. Text color customization within tables gives teams finer control over emphasis and organization without needing workarounds.
Arrow improvements make connector lines easier to manage. The update refines how arrows behave when repositioned, reducing the need to manually adjust paths after moving connected elements. A new drag-to-flip feature lets users mirror shapes by dragging a handle, eliminating the need to hunt through menus for rotation controls.
Navigation also gets smoother. Figma increased the default zoom level to reduce the frequency of manual zooming, particularly useful for boards with dense content. A recenter button now appears when users pan away from the main working area, making it faster to return to the active section of a canvas without hunting for content.
Template publishing, previously restricted to higher tiers, now extends to Pro plans. Teams on paid accounts can publish custom templates for reuse across projects, standardizing workflows without Enterprise-level pricing.
Incremental Updates as Design Tooling Matures
The release reflects a shift in how design platforms are evolving. While Figma has invested heavily in AI-powered features like voice-to-text and version history in Make workflows and text-on-path tools, this update focuses on polish rather than experimentation.
Competing tools like Miro and Canva have similarly prioritized workflow refinements alongside major feature drops. The strategy suggests design platforms are balancing innovation with the need to reduce friction in established features as user bases scale.
The updates are available now to all FigJam users. Figma did not provide a detailed changelog or blog post beyond the LinkedIn announcement, continuing its trend of releasing smaller updates through social channels rather than formal documentation. Pro plan users can begin publishing templates immediately; other features require no account changes.
