Figma Brings Code Layers and Payload Into Building Workflows

Code Layers brings collaboration with code directly onto the Figma canvas. It is one of five building features announced at Config India, alongside Specs, Guidelines, Code Sources and Payload.

According to the LinkedIn post, three of the features are in open beta. Code Sources is in closed beta, while Payload will roll out over the coming weeks.

Code Layers and Specs Put More Context on the Canvas

Code Layers adds code as something teams can work with on the canvas. The announcement describes it as a way to collaborate with code, placing it alongside the visual work rather than presenting it as a separate export.

Specs covers another form of context. It lets users shape and share that context inside Figma and is available in open beta. The announcement does not detail the types of information Specs can hold, but positions it as part of the building workflow.

These releases extend Figma’s work beyond visual editing and prototyping. Recent additions have also connected frames with external processes, including the Figma Node for Weave workflows.

Guidelines and Code Sources Give Agents Design System Context

Guidelines and Code Sources both provide agents with more design system context. Guidelines is in open beta. Code Sources has a more restricted closed beta release.

Figma has not described separate roles for the two features in this announcement. Both sit in the part of the release focused on giving an agent information about an organisation’s existing design system.

Payload is the shipping part of the update. It is designed for publishing websites and will begin rolling out in the coming weeks. Unlike the other announced features, it is not presented as a beta in the post.
