Figma Brings Update Feed and File Previews to Google Chat
Figma is rolling out a new integration with Google Chat that embeds design activity directly into Google Workspace. The update lets teams preview Figma files, receive notifications for invites and comments, and reply to feedback without switching apps.
The integration addresses a common workflow friction for design teams using Google Workspace. Rather than toggling between Slack, email, and Figma to track comments and file updates, users can now manage these interactions from within Google Chat. File previews appear inline, allowing collaborators to view designs and respond to feedback in the same thread where discussions happen.
Figma announced the feature on LinkedIn, highlighting three core capabilities: file previews, invite and comment notifications, and the ability to respond to comments directly in Chat. The move positions Figma alongside other productivity tools that have built native integrations into Google Workspace to reduce context switching.
How the Integration Works
The Google Chat integration surfaces Figma activity through a dedicated update feed. When a team member invites you to a file or leaves a comment, the notification appears in Chat with a preview of the relevant design. Users can click through to open the file in Figma or reply to comments inline, keeping the conversation centralized.
This approach mirrors Figma's broader strategy of embedding collaboration features where teams already work. The company has previously shipped updates aimed at streamlining handoffs and reducing tool sprawl, particularly as design workflows expand to include AI-assisted prototyping and code generation.
For teams already using Google Workspace, the integration eliminates the need to monitor multiple notification streams. Designers can stay in Chat while product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders weigh in on mockups, reducing the overhead of coordinating across platforms.
Context for Google Workspace Teams
The update arrives as Figma continues to expand its ecosystem integrations. Recent releases have included voice-to-text and version history in Make workflows, as well as text-on-path tools and Auto Layout in Draw mode. These features reflect a focus on reducing friction for cross-functional teams, especially in organizations where designers work closely with non-designers.
Google Chat is part of Google Workspace, which includes Gmail, Google Drive, and other productivity tools used by millions of businesses. By integrating with Chat, Figma taps into an existing communication layer that many teams already rely on for project coordination and day-to-day collaboration.
The integration is available now for Google Workspace users. Teams can enable it through the Google Chat app directory, allowing them to start receiving Figma updates in their existing channels and direct messages.
