Bolt Adds Attach and Detach Options for Design Systems in Existing Projects

Bolt released a workflow upgrade that lets users attach design systems to projects that are already underway, addressing a gap that had frustrated teams trying to retrofit standards mid-build.

The feature, announced on LinkedIn, works through Project Settings. Users can attach a design system, and Bolt will apply it to all subsequent work in that project. If the system doesn't fit, they can detach it or switch to a different one without starting over.

Why This Matters for Prototyping

Design systems enforce consistency across UI components, typography, spacing, and color. But until now, teams using Bolt had to commit to a system at project creation or rebuild from scratch if requirements changed.

The new attach and detach workflow removes that lock-in. A team might start with a generic prototype, validate the concept with stakeholders, then attach a production-ready design system before handing off to engineers. Or a founder experimenting with brand directions can swap systems to see which style resonates, without redoing layouts.

This aligns with Bolt's broader strategy around design system agents, which the company introduced earlier this year to help users build prototypes that engineers can ship without extensive rework.

How It Works

The process is straightforward. Open Project Settings in any active Bolt project, select a design system from the library, and attach it. From that point forward, Bolt generates components, applies styles, and structures code according to the system's rules.

To detach, return to Project Settings and remove the system. The project reverts to default styling, but existing work remains intact. Users can also switch systems directly, replacing one set of standards with another in a single step.

Bolt has not disclosed which design systems are supported or whether users can upload custom systems. The announcement focused on the mechanics of attaching and detaching rather than the breadth of available libraries.

Context for Teams Using Bolt

This update arrives as Bolt has been expanding its infrastructure for production use. The platform recently integrated Supabase for database management and launched a cloud platform with Netlify for hosting and scaling apps beyond the prototype stage.

The ability to swap design systems mid-project fits that trajectory. Teams can now iterate faster on styling and branding decisions without disrupting the underlying logic or data layer, keeping prototypes flexible as requirements evolve.

For users building with AI-assisted tools, this kind of modularity matters. A design system attached late in a project can still propagate changes across dozens of components without manual edits, assuming the system's rules are well-defined. That reduces the friction between exploratory builds and production-ready handoffs.

Bolt has not announced pricing changes or access restrictions for the feature, suggesting it is available to all users under existing plans.
