PostHog Adds Natural Language Queries to Heatmaps for Faster Behavioral Insights

PostHog has quietly rolled out conversational querying for its heatmap tool, allowing users to ask questions in natural language instead of manually scrolling through click and interaction data. The update, announced on LinkedIn, promises to cut down the time product teams spend hunting for user behavior patterns.

The change addresses a common friction point in heatmap analysis: knowing what you're looking for but needing to visually scan through layers of data to find it. Instead of clicking through filters and page views, users can now type queries like "where are users clicking on the checkout page" or "show me rage clicks in the last 7 days" and get direct answers.

How It Works

The feature appears to leverage the same natural language processing layer PostHog has been building across its product suite. Following their recent launch of Replay Vision, which uses AI to analyze session replays, the company has been methodically adding conversational interfaces to analytics workflows that traditionally required manual exploration.

Users can query heatmap data directly from the interface. The system interprets questions about click patterns, scroll depth, rage clicks, and other interaction metrics, then surfaces the relevant visualization or data point. For teams running A/B tests or tracking feature adoption, this means faster iteration cycles and less time spent in the tool itself.

The update doesn't replace the visual heatmap interface. Instead, it sits alongside it as an alternative entry point, particularly useful when users have specific questions rather than open-ended exploration goals.

Implications for Product Teams

For small teams without dedicated analysts, the conversational layer lowers the barrier to extracting insights from behavioral data. A founder or product manager can ask direct questions without needing to understand how to construct queries or navigate multiple dashboard views.

This also fits into a broader trend of analytics platforms adding AI layers to their core features. Tools like Notion and Airtable have added similar natural language interfaces to databases and project management, while Make and Zapier have explored conversational automation builders.

PostHog's open-source model means the feature will eventually be available to self-hosted users as well, though timing for that rollout hasn't been specified. The company has been pushing AI-assisted analysis heavily in recent months, with AI agents handling over 6,000 error tracking issues autonomously in a 30-day window.

Availability

The heatmap querying feature appears to be live for PostHog Cloud users now. The company hasn't published detailed documentation yet, and it's unclear whether there are usage limits or tier restrictions. Users on the platform should see the query interface in their heatmap views.

PostHog continues to differentiate itself by bundling product analytics, session replay, feature flags, and experimentation into a single platform. The conversational heatmap update is incremental but addresses real workflow friction, particularly for teams that need to move fast without becoming analytics experts.
