Netlify Ends Seat-Based Pricing to Open Platform to Three Billion Builders

Netlify has eliminated seat-based pricing from its platform, announced CEO Mathias Biilmann in a move that fundamentally changes how teams are billed for using the deployment platform. The company now charges based on usage metrics like bandwidth and build minutes rather than the number of people with access to a workspace.

The shift, which took effect on April 14, removes what Biilmann framed as an artificial constraint on collaboration. In the announcement, he positioned the change as preparation for an era where AI agents and human developers work alongside each other, a future that would make per-seat billing obsolete. "We're not pricing for seats anymore because we're not building for a world where seats matter," Biilmann wrote.

Pricing Based on Output, Not Headcount

Under the new model, teams pay for what they build and deploy rather than how many people contribute. Free tier users get 100 GB of bandwidth and 300 build minutes per month with unlimited team members. Pro accounts ($19 per site per month) include 1 TB bandwidth and 25,000 build minutes. Enterprise customers negotiate custom limits.

The change affects all Netlify plans retroactively. Teams that previously restricted access to avoid per-seat fees can now add designers, content editors, and external contractors without triggering additional charges. Biilmann noted in a LinkedIn post one week after launch that user feedback focused less on reduced bills and more on the ability to expand team access.

Agent-First Infrastructure

The pricing change aligns with Netlify's broader pivot toward what it calls "agent experience." The company has been building infrastructure that treats AI agents as first-class users of its platform, including agent runners that execute code in isolated environments and an AI gateway that handles authentication for language models like OpenAI's GPT-5.5 Instant, as recently covered.

Biilmann's announcement explicitly connected the pricing model to this vision, arguing that charging per seat makes no sense when agents can generate, test, and deploy code without human intervention for each step. The new model charges for compute and bandwidth regardless of whether a human or an agent triggered the deployment.

The company has also partnered with Stripe to integrate its deployment tools into Stripe Projects, a developer environment that lets users scaffold and deploy full-stack applications through a CLI. That integration, which includes one-prompt deployment workflows, assumes agents will handle much of the setup and configuration work traditionally done by developers.

Impact on Competing Platforms

Netlify's move puts pressure on competitors like Vercel and Railway, which still charge per seat or per team member on certain plans. For small teams and solo builders who collaborate with freelancers or clients, the removal of seat fees makes Netlify more cost-effective for projects with fluctuating contributor counts.

The change also benefits teams building with NoCode tools like Webflow or Framer that deploy to Netlify, since clients and stakeholders can now access preview deployments and logs without being added to paid seats. This matters for agencies and consultancies that need to give visibility to non-technical collaborators.

Biilmann positioned the decision as preparation for a development landscape where billions of people, not millions of professional developers, build and ship software with AI assistance. Whether that vision materializes remains to be seen, but the immediate effect is clear: teams no longer face a penalty for adding people to their Netlify workspaces.
