Netlify AI Gateway Adds General Availability for Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite With Zero Configuration

Netlify has released general availability support for Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite in its AI Gateway, following a preview launch in March. The GA release requires zero configuration and works across all Netlify Function types, allowing developers to integrate Google's lightweight language model without managing authentication infrastructure.

The AI Gateway automatically handles API keys, authentication, caching, and rate limiting, removing the need for developers to wire up backend infrastructure. Developers can drop the Google GenAI SDK into any Netlify Function and start generating content immediately, according to the changelog entry. The update is available to all Netlify users at no additional platform cost.

How It Works

Netlify's AI Gateway acts as a proxy layer between Functions and AI providers. When a Function calls the Gemini API through the SDK, the Gateway intercepts the request, injects credentials stored at the platform level, and manages caching and rate limit enforcement server-side.

This architecture means developers avoid exposing API keys in client code or environment variables. The Gateway also reduces redundant API calls through intelligent caching, which can lower costs for high-traffic applications making repeated similar requests.

The integration supports all Netlify Function types, including Edge Functions, background functions, and scheduled functions. Developers can use the standard Google GenAI SDK without modification; Netlify detects the SDK and routes traffic through the Gateway automatically.

Broader AI Gateway Strategy

The Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite addition follows Netlify's recent support for OpenAI GPT-5.5 Instant, also added with zero-configuration access. Netlify's AI Gateway roadmap appears focused on reducing integration friction for popular models, a strategic play as Vercel, Supabase, and other platforms compete to become the default infrastructure for AI-powered web apps.

The zero-config approach differentiates Netlify from platforms that require developers to manually set up proxy functions or manage API credentials through custom middleware. By handling authentication and caching at the platform level, Netlify positions the AI Gateway as a developer productivity tool rather than just a pass-through service.

What Developers Get

With GA support, developers building on Netlify can now use Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite for lightweight generation tasks such as content summarization, text classification, and simple chat interfaces. Flash-Lite is optimized for speed and cost efficiency, making it suitable for high-frequency use cases where full-scale models like Gemini Pro would be overkill.

The feature is immediately available. Netlify has published an example implementation in the changelog, showing how to import the SDK and call the model within a serverless function. No migration or configuration steps are required for existing Netlify projects; developers can start using the model as soon as they add the SDK dependency.

Netlify continues to expand its AI capabilities alongside recent launches including Netlify Database and Agent Runners. The company is positioning itself as an end-to-end platform for AI-native applications, not just static site hosting.
