Netlify announced support for Astro 7 on the framework's release day, enabling teams to deploy the latest version immediately with new performance optimizations built into the platform.
Astro 7, released today, ships with substantial performance improvements. The framework features a rewritten Rust compiler, a Rust-powered Markdown and MDX pipeline, and integration with Vite 8's Rolldown bundler. According to the Astro team, these changes deliver builds that are 15 to 61% faster, with some projects building more than twice as fast as previous versions.
For teams using Netlify, the release includes an experimental CDN cache provider that changes how cached responses are handled. Instead of storing cached route responses in memory within serverless functions, the new provider pushes Astro's route caching directives directly to Netlify's edge network. When a cache hit occurs, the response is served from the CDN without invoking the function at all.
Migration requires attention to markdown defaults
The upgrade to Astro 7 includes breaking changes that require developer action. The most significant: Astro now uses Sätteri, its native markdown processor, as the default pipeline. The previous remark/rehype stack is no longer included.
Developers who rely on remark or rehype plugins must install @astrojs/markdown-remark separately to maintain plugin functionality. Without this package, existing markdown transformations will break.
Other breaking changes include:
- Advanced routing moves from experimental to stable, with the default entry point shifting from
src/app.tstosrc/fetch.ts - Streaming rendering replaces the legacy queued approach as the default engine
- Astro DB CLI commands (
astro db,astro login, astro logout, astro link, astro init) have been removed; projects must migrate to dedicated database clients - The
astro devcommand now runs as a background process in AI coding environments, with newstop, status, andlogssubcommands for process management
Vite 8 and stable features
Astro 7 upgrades to Vite 8, bringing improved build performance and enhanced developer tooling. The custom logger feature, previously experimental, is now stable and available via context.logger in API routes and middleware. Built-in handlers include json, node, and console.
To upgrade an existing Astro project on Netlify, developers can run npx @astrojs/upgrade, which updates Astro core, the Netlify adapter, and all official integrations in one command. The official migration guide provides step-by-step instructions for handling breaking changes.
Netlify's same-day support continues the platform's pattern of rapid framework adoption, recently expanding beyond traditional web hosting with Agent Runners and background functions for AI-native development workflows.
