Zapier CEO Wade Foster shared details this week about the company's SDK open beta, which allows developers to execute automation across Zapier's network of more than 9,000 connected apps using simple text instructions within AI coding environments like Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex.
The SDK represents a shift from traditional workflow builders to code-first automation that works inside the development tools engineers already use. Foster demonstrated the capability through an AI agent he built called Scout, which monitors Granola notes, Slack messages, Gmail, calendar events, and Cursor transcripts to generate and rank content ideas every Monday. The agent evaluates each idea for both engagement potential and safety before flagging them for review.
According to Foster's post, Scout identified a finding about fraudulent job applications that became his most-viewed post last week. The agent assessed the topic as strong content with minimal risk, demonstrating how automation can now handle editorial judgment alongside technical execution.
Building Agents With One Text File
Foster emphasized the simplicity of the implementation. The entire Scout system runs on a single skill defined in a text file, which the agent wrote itself. The Zapier SDK serves as the bridge that translates one line of text into actions across Zapier's full ecosystem of integrations.
This approach differs from the visual workflow builders Zapier built its reputation on. Rather than dragging and dropping triggers and actions in a web interface, developers can now call Zapier's automation capabilities directly from their code editor using natural language instructions. The SDK handles the complexity of API connections, authentication, and data mapping behind the scenes.
The system works with any AI coding assistant that supports tool integration, making it accessible to developers who have standardized on different platforms. Foster built Scout in Cursor, but noted the same functionality works in Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode.
Free Beta Access for Agent Builders
Zapier is offering the SDK open beta at no cost to developers who want to integrate automation into their AI agents. The company has been steadily expanding its AI-focused offerings in recent months, as previously covered with their one-click integration system and MCP-powered customer advocacy tools.
The SDK also supports replacing multi-step Sub-Zaps with code, giving developers more control over complex automation logic that would be cumbersome to build visually.
Foster's example of Scout handling content evaluation suggests potential applications beyond marketing automation. Development teams could use similar agents to triage support tickets, qualify sales leads, or monitor production systems for issues that require human attention. The combination of Zapier's integration breadth and AI's contextual reasoning creates new possibilities for what automation can handle without human intervention.
Developers interested in the SDK can access the open beta through Zapier's website. The company has not announced pricing for the SDK beyond the beta period.
