Wix is betting big on proprietary AI. The website builder announced it has trained its own AI model for Wix Harmony, its site generation platform, using two decades of website creation knowledge and feedback from millions of users. CEO Avishai Abrahami says the move reflects a shift in strategy: Wix is becoming a company that builds AI, not just uses it.
The company claims the custom model delivers faster creation with fewer errors and continuous improvement on its own timeline. In the same breath, Wix revealed that Base44, an app-creation platform it acquired in June 2025, is now the first app-creation platform in the world to deploy its own proprietary AI model.
Why Build Instead of Buy
Abrahami framed the decision as a ceiling vs. floor problem. Most companies license third-party models because "good enough" arrives faster. But "good enough" is a ceiling. By training a model in-house, Wix gains control over the roadmap, the training data, and the ability to iterate without waiting on external vendors.
Wix Harmony already generates websites from natural language prompts. The company has been layering AI features into its platform steadily over the past year, including partnerships with Stripe and Google Ads Performance Max campaigns. Training its own model lets Wix lean into domain-specific data that general-purpose models like ChatGPT or Claude cannot match.

The dataset includes 20 years of website creation patterns, user feedback loops, and real-world usage from millions of sites built on Wix. That gives the model an edge in understanding what works in practice, not just in theory.
Base44 Goes First in App Creation
Base44's deployment is the more surprising piece. The platform, which Wix acquired mid-2025, now runs on a similar proprietary model. Wix claims this makes Base44 the first app-creation platform globally to build and ship its own AI model rather than rely on third-party APIs.
App builders like Glide, Bubble, and Softr have added AI features, but most integrate external models via API. Base44's approach mirrors Wix Harmony: train on platform-specific workflows, optimize for the kind of apps users actually build, and control the update cycle.
No pricing or availability details were shared. Wix has not said whether the custom model will expand to other parts of its platform or remain scoped to Harmony and Base44.
Strategic Implications
Wix is playing a different game than most no-code platforms. While competitors race to plug in the latest OpenAI or Anthropic API, Wix is building infrastructure that could insulate it from rate limits, pricing changes, and roadmap dependencies. The tradeoff: higher upfront cost, slower iteration at the start, and risk that the model underperforms off-the-shelf alternatives.
The company has been aggressive with AI product launches recently, including an AI marketing agent and natural language prompts for adding online courses. A proprietary model lets Wix tune those features to its ecosystem without waiting for external vendors to catch up.
It also signals where Wix sees the market going. If AI-generated sites and apps become table stakes, owning the model becomes a moat. Competitors will still be negotiating API terms when Wix is training version 3.0.
For now, Wix is keeping details sparse. The company has not disclosed model architecture, training costs, or performance benchmarks. What is clear: Wix is positioning itself as the platform that builds AI, not just the platform that uses it.
