Perplexity is expanding its health capabilities with two new data integrations that let users analyze personal health metrics through its AI answer engine.
The company announced on LinkedIn that Perplexity now connects to Apple Health on iPhone, allowing users to pull sleep patterns, activity levels, and heart rate variability (HRV) data into conversations with Perplexity Computer. Separately, Function Health has been added to Perplexity Health, enabling users to upload lab results and query their biomarkers, blood draws, and panel results through the AI interface.
Apple Health Integration Brings Wearable Data to Computer
The Apple Health connection marks Perplexity's first integration with consumer health tracking platforms. Users can now reference their personal health data when asking questions in Computer, the company's agentic AI system that can perform multi-step tasks and reasoning.
Sleep metrics, daily activity summaries, and HRV readings collected through Apple Watch or compatible devices can now inform Computer's responses. This builds on Perplexity's recent expansion of Computer capabilities, following their integration of Deep Research and the addition of advanced orchestrator models.
The integration appears limited to iPhone at launch, with no mention of Android or other health platforms.
Function Health Labs Added to Perplexity Health
The Function Health integration targets users seeking to understand comprehensive blood work and biomarker data. Function Health offers extensive lab panels that measure over 100 biomarkers, positioning itself as a proactive health monitoring service.
Users can now upload Function Health results directly into Perplexity Health and ask natural language questions about their lab values, trends over time, or what specific biomarkers indicate. The feature extends Perplexity's existing health-focused tools, which already include medical literature search and symptom analysis.
Perplexity Health launched as a dedicated health information product earlier this year, competing with medical AI assistants and health information platforms. The Function Health partnership suggests the company is building relationships with digital health providers to create a more comprehensive health data ecosystem.
Key capabilities include:
- Querying specific biomarker results and ranges
- Asking about blood panel interpretations
- Understanding lab result implications
- Tracking changes across multiple blood draws
Neither integration appears to require a Perplexity Pro or Max subscription based on the announcement, though Computer access has historically been a premium feature. The company did not specify whether the health data remains local to the user's device or is processed through Perplexity's servers, a significant privacy consideration for sensitive medical information.
Perplexity continues to differentiate itself from competitors like ChatGPT and Claude by focusing on real-time information retrieval and specialized verticals like health, rather than purely conversational AI. The health integrations follow recent product updates including Windows support for Computer and new model options for power users.
The announcements position Perplexity as a central hub for personal health data analysis, though the company faces regulatory considerations around medical advice and HIPAA compliance as it deepens health product offerings.
