Automated monitoring for paid campaigns
n8n released a workflow template that monitors Meta Ads and Google Ads campaigns automatically, flagging underperforming campaigns before budget is wasted. The template, shared this week on LinkedIn, runs daily checks against key performance indicators and sends alerts across multiple channels when metrics fall below predefined thresholds.
The workflow pulls campaign data from both platforms using their respective APIs, normalizes the metrics, and calculates click-through rate (CTR) and return on ad spend (ROAS) against fixed benchmarks. Teams receive immediate notifications via WhatsApp, Slack, or email when a campaign drops below acceptable performance levels. All results are logged in Google Sheets for trend analysis and reporting.
How the workflow detects performance drops
The template operates in three stages. First, it fetches yesterday's campaign data from Meta Ads using an HTTP request and from Google Ads via the native n8n integration. Each platform's data is then normalized through a Set node that standardizes field names and assigns platform identifiers.
Next, a Code node calculates CTR and ROAS for each campaign, compares them against benchmarks, and flags any drops. An If node filters out campaigns that meet performance standards, passing only underperforming campaigns to the alert stage. A Split In Batches node processes each flagged campaign individually, ensuring alerts contain campaign-specific details.
Finally, the workflow sends alerts through three channels simultaneously. WhatsApp messages provide instant mobile visibility, Slack posts deliver detailed alerts to team channels, and Gmail sends formatted email notifications with full campaign metrics. This multi-channel approach ensures teams see critical alerts regardless of their preferred communication tool.
Logging and reporting capabilities
Every campaign check is logged in Google Sheets, creating a historical record of performance data. The workflow appends new rows with campaign name, platform, metrics, and alert status, making it straightforward to review trends over time or generate reports for stakeholders.
The template is available immediately in n8n's workflow library. Teams can use it for free by importing it into their n8n instance, either cloud-hosted or self-hosted. Users will need to configure credentials for Meta Ads, Google Ads, WhatsApp, Slack, Gmail, and Google Sheets before running the workflow.
This release follows n8n's recent focus on AI and automation templates for technical teams. The company previously released a template for employee onboarding and added native integrations for tools like Gamma to support automated presentation workflows.
Configuration and customization
The workflow uses schedule triggers to run checks at specified times each day. Teams can adjust the benchmarks for CTR and ROAS by editing the Code node's threshold values. The default settings flag campaigns when CTR drops below 2% or ROAS falls under 3x, but these can be modified to match specific business goals or industry standards.
Users can also extend the workflow by adding more alert channels or connecting it to downstream tools. For example, teams might feed flagged campaigns into a Make workflow for budget reallocation, or log alerts in Airtable for deeper analysis alongside other marketing data.
n8n is an open-source workflow automation platform designed for technical teams building AI solutions and integrations. The platform supports both no-code and code-based workflows, and can be self-hosted or run on n8n's cloud infrastructure.
