Gateway credits let n8n Cloud users run supported AI models and tool services without first creating a provider account, adding payment details or generating an API key.
Starting with n8n v2.36, builders on select self-service Cloud plans can choose Gateway credits when configuring a supported node. Usage is then charged against a shared prepaid balance held in n8n rather than through a direct account with the provider.
The n8n blog post says six model providers and five tool services are supported at launch.

How Gateway credits work in n8n
Previously, testing an unfamiliar model or service could involve leaving the workflow editor, registering with the provider, adding a payment method, generating an API key and storing that credential in n8n. Gateway credits remove those setup steps for supported nodes.
When adding one of those nodes, the builder selects Gateway credits instead of adding their own credential. The workflow can then call the service using the prepaid n8n balance.
Teams can share one balance across supported services. The Cloud Admin Panel shows Gateway credit use by workflow or by service, giving administrators one place to track where the balance is being spent.
Pricing and provider accounts
n8n publishes Gateway credit rates on a single public service-pricing page. Its stated aim is to follow each provider’s published list price where one exists, without adding a premium for using the gateway. Balances and rates are displayed in real currency.
Using Gateway credits is optional. Builders can still add their own API keys and maintain a direct account with each provider, using the same credential setup available before v2.36.
