ElevenLabs has announced a partnership with Bookwire to expand its audiobook catalog inside the ElevenReader app, bringing high-quality AI-narrated titles to more than a dozen languages. The deal addresses a long-standing gap in the publishing industry: only about 5 percent of published books currently exist in audio format, a figure that drops even lower for less common languages.
Bookwire, a digital book distribution and technology company based in Germany, will make titles from its publishers' catalogs available through ElevenLabs, which will convert them into audio using its voice synthesis platform. The partnership targets languages ranging from English and Spanish to Polish and Arabic, giving publishers a new route into the global audio market without the traditional costs of human narration.
Why This Matters for Publishers
The audiobook market has grown rapidly in recent years, but production costs have kept the majority of published works in text-only formats. Human narrators can cost thousands of dollars per finished hour, and recording in multiple languages multiplies that expense. ElevenLabs' AI voice technology offers a faster, more scalable alternative that publishers can deploy across their backlists.
John Ruhrmann, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Bookwire, said the partnership gives publishers who opt in a "powerful new route into the global audio market." For smaller publishers or those working in languages with limited audiobook infrastructure, the economics shift dramatically.
ElevenReader, the app at the center of this partnership, already allows users to upload ebooks and listen to them in AI-generated voices. The Bookwire integration will expand the in-app catalog, letting users discover and listen to professionally published titles without leaving the platform.
Building on Recent AI Content Initiatives
ElevenLabs has been steadily expanding its creative tools beyond straightforward text-to-speech. Earlier this year, the company launched Flows, a node-based canvas for building multi-step audio and video pipelines, and introduced a music marketplace for AI-generated tracks. The Bookwire deal represents a push into traditional publishing, an industry still grappling with how to adopt AI tools at scale.
The partnership also follows ElevenLabs' broader work on speech restoration and preservation, which the company showcased in its 11 Voices docuseries at SXSW. While that project focused on individuals who had lost their voices, the Bookwire collaboration applies similar technology to the written word, converting text into spoken form across linguistic and geographic boundaries.

What Comes Next
Neither company has disclosed the size of the initial catalog or a timeline for rollout, but the partnership positions ElevenLabs as a key infrastructure player for publishers looking to enter audio distribution. The announcement arrives as major tech companies, including IBM, are partnering with ElevenLabs to deliver multilingual voice AI at enterprise scale.
For publishers, the question will be how readers respond to AI narration quality and whether it can drive meaningful engagement in markets where audiobooks have historically struggled. For ElevenLabs, the deal is another step in proving that AI voice technology can handle long-form content across languages without sacrificing listener experience.
