Vercel Expands Free domain with Pro offer to .app and .dev

Vercel is adding .app and .dev domains to its Free domain with Pro offer, giving paying teams two more relevant naming options for software products, developer tools and mobile applications. The expansion brings the total number of eligible top-level domains to eight, although the benefit remains limited to one domain per team for the first year.

The company detailed the change in a changelog announcement published on September 2. All Pro teams can claim an eligible domain through Vercel, either by registering a new name or transferring a domain, under the terms of the existing offer.

The complete list of included top-level domains is now:

  • .app
  • .dev
  • .online
  • .site
  • .space
  • .store
  • .tech
  • .website

Adding .app and .dev makes the benefit more useful for Vercel’s core audience. The original selection included broad alternatives to .com, but these two extensions are more closely associated with software companies and technical projects. A builder launching a SaaS product, internal tool or developer service can now choose a domain that describes the project without buying it separately during the first year.

The Free Domain Still Comes With Limits

The headline benefit is straightforward, but teams should pay attention to the conditions. Vercel covers one eligible domain per Pro team for one year. Premium domains, which are desirable names sold at higher prices, do not qualify.

The domain is also not permanently free. Vercel says it will renew automatically after the first year at the standard renewal price displayed during checkout when the team initially claims it. That makes the checkout price an important detail to record, particularly for small businesses managing several annual software and infrastructure expenses.

Teams should therefore treat the offer as a waived first-year registration cost rather than an ongoing discount. Before claiming a name, an administrator should confirm that it is not marked as premium, review its future renewal price and make sure the domain is being added to the correct Pro team. The one-domain limit means using the benefit for a temporary experiment could prevent the team from applying it to a more important launch.

Vercel has not announced any changes to Pro pricing as part of this update. It has only expanded the range of domains covered by the existing promotion.

A Broader Push to Add Value for Pro Teams

The domain change is a relatively small account benefit, but it fits a wider pattern of Vercel adding options to its paid plans. The company has also brought Basic build machines to Pro and Enterprise teams, providing a lower-cost compute choice for smaller applications.

For independent developers and small teams, bundling a domain with hosting can reduce setup work as well as the initial expense. Domain registration, DNS configuration and deployment can remain within the same platform, rather than being split between a registrar and hosting provider. That operational convenience may matter more than the registration fee itself for teams without dedicated infrastructure staff.

The addition does not change how existing Vercel deployments work, nor does it require teams to move an established domain. It simply broadens the choices available when an eligible Pro team claims its single free first-year domain through Vercel Domains.
