Vercel Adds Chat SDK XChat support for Encrypted Messaging Bots

Vercel is bringing automated agents into X’s encrypted inbox. In an August 25 changelog update, the company introduced an official XChat adapter for Chat SDK, allowing developers to build bots that participate in end-to-end encrypted direct and group conversations.

The integration handles encryption, key management, and signature verification automatically. That removes some of the most sensitive infrastructure work developers would otherwise need to implement before connecting an application to an encrypted messaging service.

It also expands Vercel’s effort to make one bot work across several communication platforms. Chat SDK already targets services including Slack, Discord, and Microsoft Teams. Vercel also recently introduced a Notion adapter for page comments.

What the XChat Adapter Handles

Developers add XChat through the @chat-adapter/x package and register it when creating a Chat SDK bot. Event handlers can then respond to direct messages and post replies through the same thread-based interface used by the wider SDK.

A basic implementation follows this pattern:

import { Chat } from "chat";
import { createXchatAdapter } from "@chat-adapter/x/chat";

const bot = new Chat({
  userName: "mybot",
  adapters: {
    xchat: createXchatAdapter(),
  },
});

bot.onDirectMessage(async (thread, message) => {
  await thread.post(`You said: ${message.text}`);
});

According to Vercel, the adapter takes responsibility for three particularly consequential parts of the connection:

  • Encryption, for participating in XChat’s end-to-end encrypted conversations
  • Key management, avoiding a separate implementation for handling cryptographic keys
  • Signature verification, helping the bot verify messages within the encrypted workflow

The adapter supports both one-to-one and group conversations. Bots can also initiate a message, but Vercel places two conditions on that behavior: the recipient must have encrypted chat configured and must follow the bot. Those restrictions will shape onboarding flows for businesses planning proactive notifications or support messages.

XChat does not render Markdown. Vercel says the adapter applies a fallback automatically, but developers should still test messages that depend on headings, lists, links, or other rich formatting. A response that looks polished in Slack or Discord may be presented differently in XChat.

Why It Matters for Small Teams

For small businesses and independent builders, the main benefit is not simply another channel. It is the ability to reuse bot logic while delegating platform-specific encryption and message handling to an official adapter. A support assistant, community bot, or internal notification agent can be connected to XChat without maintaining an entirely separate messaging implementation.

The release also sits alongside Vercel’s broader messaging push. On the same date, the company listed integrations for Notion and XChat, while Vercel Connect added Linq for iMessage, RCS, and SMS, as covered in Vercel Connect Adds Linq Messaging for Apps and Agents.

There are still practical limits. The announcement does not specify pricing, plan requirements, rate limits, deployment requirements, or the full range of supported XChat message types. Teams considering production use will need to consult the XChat adapter documentation and validate formatting, permissions, group behavior, and message initiation rules against their intended workflow.

Frequently asked questions

What is Vercel Chat SDK XChat support?

Vercel Chat SDK XChat support is an official adapter that lets developers build bots for XChat’s end-to-end encrypted one-to-one and group conversations. The adapter manages encryption, cryptographic keys, and signature verification automatically.

Can an XChat bot message a user first?

Yes, but only when the user has encrypted chat set up and follows the bot. Vercel’s announcement does not describe additional initiation permissions or limits.

When is the XChat adapter available, and what does it cost?

Vercel announced the adapter on August 25, 2026, and described it as available through Chat SDK. The announcement did not provide separate pricing or identify a required Vercel plan.
