Stripe has expanded support for Shared Payment Tokens (SPT), opening access to network-led agentic payment capabilities from Mastercard and Visa. The move positions the payment processor to handle transactions initiated by AI agents on behalf of users, a category of commerce expected to grow as autonomous software handles more purchasing decisions.
The expansion includes support for Mastercard Agent Pay and Visa Intelligent Commerce. According to Nick Levy, a Stripe executive, writing on LinkedIn, these agentic network tokens function similarly to existing card-on-file network tokens. Payment networks automatically map the agentic token to the latest funding payment account number (FPAN) when sending authorization requests to card issuers.
The system also transmits additional context in authorization messages, giving issuers more information to assess risk and make approval decisions. This extra data layer aims to help banks distinguish legitimate agent-initiated transactions from potential fraud.
Learning Curve for Issuers
Stripe expects authorization rates to follow a pattern similar to the adoption of network tokens, which took time to deliver their current performance advantage. Network tokens now outperform traditional PANs across Stripe by approximately 2%, but early adoption was marked by caution as issuers adjusted their systems.
Levy noted that new signals require time for issuers to build confidence and integrate into risk models. Some banks may initially treat agentic tokens differently simply because they represent unfamiliar technology, while others may ignore the additional data entirely during the adjustment period.
As issuers grow comfortable with authenticated agents and verified intent signals, Stripe anticipates that authorization rates will stabilize and eventually improve. The timeline for this maturation will depend on how quickly banks update their fraud detection and risk assessment infrastructure to recognize and leverage the new token format.
Broader Context
The expansion reflects growing industry preparation for agentic commerce, where AI assistants handle purchasing on behalf of users. Payment networks and processors are building infrastructure to support these automated transactions while maintaining security and fraud prevention standards.
Stripe's implementation through SPT means businesses using the platform can begin accepting agent-initiated payments without rebuilding their payment integration. The tokens work within existing card network rails, allowing adoption without requiring merchants to implement entirely new payment flows.
For businesses processing payments through Stripe, the expanded SPT support operates in the background. As AI agents become more capable of handling purchasing decisions, the infrastructure to process those payments securely will already be in place.
