Notion announced a small but significant expansion for Custom Agents, which can now be added to private Slack channels. Users can invite the agents just as they would a teammate, and the agents only see channels they are explicitly added to.
The update addresses a common deployment constraint for teams using Slack alongside Notion's AI capabilities. Previously, Custom Agents operated in public channels or within Notion workspaces, but private channels remained off limits. With this change, teams can deploy agents in more restricted environments while maintaining granular control over what the agents can access.
Notion has been steadily building out its Custom Agents offering since launching the beta earlier this year. As the company previously covered, admins can now track agent usage and set controls around who can create and deploy agents. The platform also recently introduced an Agent Hall of Fame to showcase workflows from early adopters.
How Channel Permissions Work
The new functionality treats Custom Agents like human collaborators. When added to a private channel, an agent has visibility only into that channel's messages and threads. It cannot access other private channels, even within the same workspace, unless separately invited. This scoped access model aligns with how many teams already think about Slack permissions.
For organizations with strict data governance requirements, this means they can test agents in controlled environments before rolling them out more broadly. A support team might add a custom agent to a private triage channel, for example, without exposing it to channels containing sensitive customer data or internal discussions.
Broader Agent Strategy
Notion positions Custom Agents as AI teammates designed to handle repetitive workflows autonomously. The agents can pull context from Notion databases, connected apps, and the web to complete multi-step tasks. Ramp, one of Notion's customers, has built agents for repetitive processes across operations, with Head of AI & Operations Ben Levick noting that "if it's something that's repetitive, we have a Notion Agent for it."
The company recently extended agents into email as well, allowing them to search inboxes and draft responses. It also connected to xAI's Grok via the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to enable workspace chat integration. Each update expands the surface area where agents can operate, moving beyond document generation into workflow execution.
The private Slack channel support fits into this pattern. By meeting teams where they already collaborate, Notion reduces friction in deploying AI assistance. Teams can now route specific types of questions or tasks to agents in dedicated channels, using Slack's existing channel architecture as the deployment layer.
Custom Agents are available on Notion's Business plan, which starts at $15 per user per month when billed annually. The feature remains in active development, with Notion releasing updates based on feedback from beta users.
