MailerLite Launches AI-Powered Mailchimp Importer to Speed Up Platform Migrations

MailerLite released an updated Mailchimp Importer that uses AI to automate field mapping and eliminate manual CSV exports, addressing one of the most time-consuming parts of switching email marketing platforms.

The new importer connects directly to Mailchimp via API, reads existing columns and custom fields, and matches them to equivalent fields in MailerLite. When a match is not found, the system suggests creating a custom field, removing the guesswork from data migration.

Direct API Connection Replaces CSV Workflow

Previous migration tools typically required users to export subscriber lists as CSV files, manually map columns, and re-import data in multiple steps. MailerLite's approach bypasses this process entirely. Once connected via API, the importer pulls subscriber data, segments, and custom fields directly from Mailchimp and organizes them within MailerLite's structure.

The company highlighted a case study with KC Tool, which switched to MailerLite to access automation features and reduce costs. The new importer is designed to shorten the time between deciding to switch and launching the first campaign on the new platform.

AI Handles Field Matching and Custom Field Suggestions

The AI component analyzes field names and data types from Mailchimp, then proposes matches to MailerLite's existing field structure. For fields that do not have a direct equivalent, the importer recommends creating custom fields with appropriate data types. This automation reduces the manual effort required to ensure subscriber data remains intact and usable after migration.

Segments are also imported and reorganized to maintain audience structure. MailerLite positions this as a way to preserve marketing workflows without rebuilding lists from scratch.

The update arrives as MailerLite continues to expand its AI capabilities. The platform recently launched a Simple Email Editor and Custom HTML Builder with an AI agent, and enabled third-party AI integrations with Claude and Gemini.

Competing on Migration Friction

Email marketing platforms have historically competed on features and pricing, but migration complexity has remained a significant barrier. Tools that reduce switching costs can accelerate churn from incumbent providers. By targeting Mailchimp specifically, MailerLite is focusing on the largest player in the small business email marketing segment.

The importer is available now to MailerLite users. The company has not disclosed whether similar importers for other platforms are in development.

MailerLite also recently partnered with Clearout to block fake signups in real time, addressing deliverability concerns that often arise during platform migrations when list quality varies.
