Granola Adds / template command for Consistent Notes During Meetings

Granola is making structured meeting notes easier to use in the moment. Its new / template command lets users add a template to an open note before a meeting starts or while the conversation is already underway, reducing the need to prepare every document in advance.

The company announced the feature on LinkedIn on August 17. To use it, a participant types / inside a note and selects the required template from the menu. Granola says the template’s formatting remains intact after the note is enhanced.

It is a modest interface change, but one aimed squarely at a common weakness in meeting workflows: templates are useful only when people remember to set them up.

Structure without more preparation

The command is particularly relevant for recurring conversations. A manager could open a 1:1 note and insert the team’s usual agenda, while a salesperson could apply a discovery-call structure after joining a meeting. Researchers running user interviews could use the same question and observation fields across sessions, making notes easier to review and compare later.

Potential uses include:

  • 1:1 meetings, with sections for updates, blockers, feedback and follow-up items
  • Sales calls, organised around qualification questions, objections and next steps
  • User research, with repeatable prompts and space for observations
  • Project reviews, covering progress, risks, decisions and owners

Previously, getting this consistency depended more heavily on preparing the note with the right template beforehand. Allowing a template to be inserted during the meeting gives users a recovery path when preparation did not happen, or when the purpose of a call becomes clear only after it begins.

Granola’s promise to preserve formatting after enhancement is also important. Templates provide more than prompts; their headings and sections establish where information should go. If enhancement flattened that structure into generic prose, teams would lose much of the benefit. According to the announcement, the enhanced note continues to follow the selected format.

A practical addition to Granola’s template system

The update builds on Granola’s existing work around repeatable meeting formats. The company has already offered purpose-built structures such as its Retrospective meeting template, which is designed to make commitments and follow-up items easier to track. The new command makes templates less dependent on a pre-meeting workflow.

For small teams, the main benefit is standardisation without imposing a separate documentation process. Consistent sections can make it easier to scan several customer calls, hand a meeting record to a colleague or identify missing follow-ups. Templates may also help teams establish lightweight operating habits before investing in a more complicated sales or research system.

This release is narrower than Granola’s recent expansion into new devices and external knowledge tools. The company has launched an Apple Watch app for meetings away from a laptop and added integrations to its MCP connectors. The / template command instead improves the core note-taking surface, where users organise information as a meeting unfolds.

Granola has not provided plan requirements or separate pricing for the command in the supplied announcement. It also has not detailed whether administrators can limit template selection or enforce a default format. For now, the feature’s value is straightforward: users can bring an established structure into a note at the point they actually need it, without losing that structure when Granola enhances the result.

Frequently asked questions

What is Granola / template command?

Granola’s / template command is a shortcut for adding an existing template to a meeting note. A user types / before or during a meeting, selects a template and continues taking notes within that structure.

Does Granola preserve the template after enhancing a note?

Yes. Granola says the template’s formatting remains in place after the note has been enhanced, allowing headings and other structural elements to carry through to the finished note.

Which meetings are best suited to the command?

Granola specifically highlights recurring meetings where consistency is useful, including 1:1s, sales calls and user calls. It can also apply to other repeated formats where participants want the same sections across multiple notes.
