Discord Expands Family Center With Teen Activity Insights and Guardian Controls

Discord is expanding its Family Center feature with new tools that give guardians deeper visibility into their teens' platform activity. The update, which began rolling out this week, adds activity metrics, reporting notifications, and guardian-managed settings to the parental oversight tool first launched in 2023.

Guardians who have already linked to their teen's Discord account will now see aggregated data on total purchases, time spent in voice and video calls, and which users and servers their teen interacts with most. The company positions these insights as conversation starters rather than surveillance tools, following previous safety initiatives aimed at teen protection.

New Activity Metrics and Reporting Features

The updated Family Center dashboard displays several new data points. Guardians can view cumulative spending on Discord, including Nitro subscriptions and in-app purchases. Call duration metrics show total time spent in voice and video channels, though they don't reveal specific call content or participants beyond aggregate statistics.

The interface also surfaces top contacts and servers, showing which users and communities a teen messages or calls most frequently. Discord emphasizes that message content remains private; guardians see engagement patterns but not conversation details.

Teens gain an optional feature to notify their guardian when they submit a safety report through Discord's moderation system. This opt-in notification creates transparency around safety concerns without requiring guardian intervention.

Guardian-Managed Settings

The update introduces three categories of guardian-controlled settings. Direct message controls let guardians restrict who can send their teen DMs, limiting messages to friends only or disabling DMs from specific user groups. Sensitive content filters, which blur potentially explicit images before they display, can now be configured by guardians rather than just teens.

Data privacy controls give guardians management over select settings, though Discord hasn't detailed which specific privacy options fall under guardian control. The company maintains that teens always see the same information guardians do, preserving visibility into what's being monitored.

Balancing Safety and Autonomy

Discord frames the features as collaborative rather than restrictive, avoiding the monitoring approach some parental control tools employ. The platform's teen safety strategy has evolved through multiple updates, including the launch of open-source safety tools and hardware integrations like Meta Quest activity sharing.

The company announced these changes through LinkedIn, highlighting transparency as a design principle. By showing teens the same data guardians see, Discord aims to encourage dialogue about online behavior rather than covert monitoring.

The Family Center updates are rolling out gradually to accounts where guardians have already established connections with their teens. Discord requires mutual consent for Family Center setup; teens must approve guardian access rather than having oversight imposed automatically.

Access to the updated features requires both guardian and teen accounts to run current versions of Discord. The company has not specified a timeline for complete rollout across its user base.
