Bolt Improves Select Tool With Smarter Default Element Targeting

Bolt has updated its Select tool to streamline element selection in its AI-powered web development platform. The change addresses a common workflow friction: clicking on nested elements now defaults to the topmost useful layer automatically, eliminating the need for users to manually pick through stacked components.

The update, announced on LinkedIn, ships with two additional controls for teams that need granular layer access. Users can enable a "Pick from layers" toggle for workflows that require exact element targeting, or hold Alt (Option on Mac) to invoke the layer picker on demand without changing their default selection behavior.

How the New Select Behavior Works

When users click an element in Bolt's canvas, the tool now intelligently selects the topmost interactive or styleable component rather than forcing a choice between parent containers and child elements. This matters most when working with complex layouts: buttons inside cards, text within heroes, or icons nested in navigation bars.

For designers migrating prototypes from tools like Figma or engineers refining components built with Bolt's AI prompts, the change reduces the number of clicks required to target the right layer. Teams building design systems or component libraries can still access every layer in the stack through the persistent toggle or keyboard shortcut.

Why Selection Logic Matters in AI Builders

Bolt positions itself as a prompt-to-deployment platform for full-stack applications, competing with tools like Lovable and v0. As these platforms handle increasingly complex UI generation, element selection becomes a bottleneck. Users often need to edit AI-generated components after the initial prompt, and poor selection behavior multiplies the friction of manual refinement.

The update follows Bolt's recent launch of multiplayer mode and redesigned projects dashboard, both aimed at improving handoffs between designers, developers, and stakeholders. Smarter selection defaults fit that pattern: small workflow improvements that compound when teams iterate quickly.

The layer picker remains available for edge cases where automatic selection misses the intended target, but Bolt's bet is that most clicks should just work without additional input. Teams can test the new behavior now in Bolt's production editor at bolt.new.
