Perplexity announced on LinkedIn that Computer, its AI agent feature that can interact with applications on behalf of users, is now available on Android. The expansion marks a significant shift for the desktop-first capability, bringing autonomous AI control to mobile devices for the first time.
Computer launched initially as a Mac-only feature in February, enabling users to delegate tasks like web research, data entry, and application control to AI agents. The tool can navigate browsers, fill forms, and execute multi-step workflows without constant human supervision. By extending to Android, Perplexity is betting that mobile users want the same hands-off automation that desktop users have been testing for the past month.
Mobile Control Raises New Questions
Bringing Computer to Android introduces challenges that didn't exist on desktop. Mobile operating systems have stricter sandboxing and permission models than macOS or Windows. Apps operate in isolated environments, and cross-app automation typically requires explicit user consent at multiple steps.
Perplexity has not disclosed how Computer handles these Android limitations. The company previously implemented sandboxing and content scanning on desktop to address security concerns, but mobile security models are fundamentally different. Android's accessibility services, which some automation tools use to control apps, have been subject to increased scrutiny from Google over potential misuse.
The Android release also raises questions about what tasks users can realistically delegate on a phone. Desktop workflows often involve multiple windows, complex data manipulation, and extended research sessions. Mobile usage patterns tend toward quick, focused interactions. It remains unclear whether Computer on Android will support the same breadth of tasks as the desktop version or focus on mobile-specific use cases.
Expanding Beyond Mac
The Android launch follows Perplexity's Mac app release earlier this year, which introduced Computer as a premium feature. The Mac version allowed Pro users to invoke AI agents that could operate browsers, interact with local files, and control installed applications through a combination of vision models and UI automation.
By moving to Android first rather than Windows or iOS, Perplexity may be targeting the platform with the most flexible automation capabilities. Android's open architecture and sideloading support give developers more freedom than iOS, while the mobile-first user base is larger than desktop in many markets.
The company has not announced Windows or iOS versions of Computer, though the Android release suggests cross-platform expansion is underway. Perplexity Pro and Max subscribers will likely gain access to Computer on Android as part of their existing plans, consistent with the Mac rollout.
What This Means for AI Automation
Perplexity's push into mobile agent automation comes as several competitors, including ChatGPT and Claude, experiment with computer control features. OpenAI has tested agents that can browse the web and execute tasks, while Anthropic released Claude Computer Use for API users in late 2025.
Unlike those tools, which primarily target developers or desktop power users, Perplexity is positioning Computer as a consumer-facing mobile product. That strategy could accelerate adoption if the Android app proves reliable and useful for everyday tasks. It could also surface new risks if users grant broad permissions without fully understanding what the AI can access.
Perplexity has not shared metrics on Computer adoption or usage patterns since launch. The Android release will test whether mobile users trust AI agents with the same level of device control they've been reluctant to grant traditional automation apps.
