Notion is finally migrating to notion.com after operating on the .so domain since its early days. The move, announced by co-founder Akshay Kothari, comes after a years-long acquisition process that began in 2018 and involved an unconventional negotiation strategy.
The domain purchase took a creative turn when traditional broker tactics failed to produce results. After a year of anonymous outreach yielded no progress, Notion shifted to a relationship-focused approach through a different broker who spent months building trust with the domain owner, an entrepreneur and Grateful Dead fan on the west coast.
The Grateful Dead Gambit
Kothari reached out to investor Ronny Conway to arrange something beyond a standard cash offer: a private meeting between the domain owner and the Grateful Dead. Conway delivered, securing a 15-minute post-concert meeting in New York City on Halloween. While the domain owner ultimately declined the band meeting, the gesture helped close the deal.
The final agreement included cash, equity in Notion, and the option for the concert meeting. The domain owner chose to lean into the equity component, a decision that has likely paid off given Notion's growth trajectory since 2018.

Timing the Switch
The migration to notion.com is scheduled for 2026, though Kothari did not specify an exact date. The move represents a significant branding shift for the company, which has built its identity on the .so domain over the past several years. Country-code top-level domains like .so (Somalia) have been popular among tech startups for their brevity and availability, but many companies eventually migrate to .com addresses as they scale.
The announcement comes as Notion continues expanding its platform capabilities. The company recently launched its Developer Platform with new building blocks for developers and agents, and has been iterating on Custom Agents that handle workflows autonomously.
For users, the domain change should be largely transparent, with redirects handling the transition from notion.so to notion.com. The company has not disclosed technical details about the migration timeline or whether any service interruptions are expected during the switchover.
The story illustrates how domain acquisitions at scale often require patience and creativity beyond pure financial offers. For Notion, the wait appears to have been worth it, as the company now owns the premium domain that matches its brand name exactly.
