Notion Brings Its API to the Terminal
Notion has launched ntn, a command-line interface designed for developers and AI coding agents. Announced on LinkedIn, the new CLI exposes the entire Notion API directly in the terminal and includes infrastructure for building syncs, agent tools, and webhooks. The move is part of Notion's broader push into developer tooling, following their recent Developer Platform launch.
Developers can install ntn with a single curl command: curl -fsSL https://ntn.dev | bash. The CLI supports macOS (both Intel and Apple Silicon) and Linux (x64 and ARM64), with Windows currently unsupported.
Built for Humans and Agents
The CLI is architected with both human developers and AI coding agents in mind. Commands are structured to keep agent context lean, which matters when LLMs have token limits and need to maintain coherent state across multi-step workflows. This design choice suggests Notion is thinking seriously about how agents will interact with their platform, not just as an afterthought.
Authentication uses keychain management rather than environment variables or config files. Credentials are stored securely in the system keychain (macOS Keychain on Darwin, libsecret on Linux), reducing the risk of accidentally committing secrets to version control or exposing them in process lists.
Syncs, Agent Tools, and Webhooks
The CLI goes beyond simple API calls. Developers can build and deploy syncs that connect Notion to external systems, create custom agent tools that extend what Notion's Custom Agents can do, and set up webhooks for event-driven workflows. This makes ntn a deployment platform, not just a convenience wrapper around HTTP requests.
The ability to ship agent tools directly from the CLI is particularly notable. As we previously covered, Notion has been expanding agent capabilities rapidly. Now developers can build custom tools that agents can invoke, all managed through the terminal.
The installer script handles platform detection automatically, including a clever check for Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon Macs. If the system reports x86_64 but is actually running on ARM via Rosetta, the script installs the native ARM64 binary instead. The CLI is distributed as statically-linked binaries (musl on Linux, native on macOS) to minimize dependency issues.
Part of a Larger Developer Push
The ntn CLI is the latest in a series of developer-focused releases from Notion. The company recently launched Workers for custom code execution, two-way database sync, and an External Agents API. Together, these tools position Notion as a platform for building automated workflows and AI-powered systems, not just a documentation and project management tool.
For teams already deep in the Notion ecosystem, ntn offers a way to programmatically manage workspaces, automate content creation, and integrate with CI/CD pipelines. For developers building agent-based systems, it provides a structured way to let AI assistants interact with Notion data without writing custom API clients.
The CLI is available now at ntn.dev.
