Notion Brings Layout Builder to Mobile for Database Customization

Mobile Layout Editing Arrives

Notion shipped a mobile update to its Layout Builder, allowing users to customize database page layouts directly from their phones. The feature extends an existing desktop capability to iOS and Android, making it faster to reorganize content while working remotely or away from a computer.

Users can now open any database page on mobile and begin rearranging layout elements without switching to a desktop browser. The update removes a friction point for teams that rely on Notion databases for project tracking, CRM workflows, or knowledge bases but need to make quick adjustments on the go.

What Changed

The Layout Builder lets users drag and drop properties, text blocks, and embeds to restructure how information appears on a database page. Previously available only on desktop, the tool now supports the same interactions on touchscreens.

Notion announced the update on LinkedIn, calling it a "quality-of-life" improvement. The company did not detail whether the mobile version supports all desktop Layout Builder features, such as multi-column arrangements or advanced property grouping.

This follows several recent database enhancements, including an expansion of pinned properties from 4 to 15, giving users more control over which fields stay visible at the top of a page.

Why It Matters

Database customization has traditionally required a desktop session, which can slow down workflows for mobile-first teams. Sales reps updating deal stages, support teams triaging tickets, or content managers reviewing editorial calendars often need to adjust layouts quickly without waiting to return to a laptop.

The mobile Layout Builder fits into Notion's broader push to close feature gaps between platforms. While the company has prioritized AI capabilities like custom agents and advanced model integrations in recent months, foundational usability updates like this one address everyday friction points that affect retention.

For small teams using Notion as a lightweight alternative to tools like Airtable or Glide, mobile parity matters. The ability to restructure a database from a phone makes Notion more viable as a standalone workspace, rather than one component of a multi-tool stack.

The update is live now across Notion's mobile apps. No announcement was made regarding API access to Layout Builder configurations, which would allow developers to automate layout changes programmatically.
