Netlify Simplifies Event-Driven Functions With Named Handler Exports

Netlify released a significant update to how developers subscribe to platform events in Functions, replacing file-naming conventions with typed handler exports that improve discoverability for both IDEs and AI coding agents.

The change, announced on LinkedIn, moves away from requiring developers to create files with specific names for event subscriptions. Instead, functions export named handlers like userSignup, deploySucceeded, or formSubmitted directly from their code.

Typed interfaces replace naming conventions

The previous approach required developers to remember and implement specific file names to trigger event-driven behavior. The new system provides fully typed arguments and return values, giving IDEs and coding agents explicit information about what each handler expects and returns.

This addresses a core challenge in event-driven architectures: making the subscription model visible and understandable to automated tools. When an AI agent analyzes a codebase using the old system, it had to infer event handling from file names. With named exports and type definitions, the contract is explicit in the code itself.

The update also enables more flexible code organization. A single function can now subscribe to multiple events, and multiple functions can listen to the same event. Developers organize logic around what belongs together rather than around platform naming requirements.

Netlify has been systematically redesigning its Functions API to prioritize what the company calls Agent Experience, a set of design principles focused on making APIs easier for AI tools to discover and use. The event handler update follows that pattern, trading implicit conventions for explicit, typed interfaces.

Part of broader Agent Experience focus

The changes to event subscriptions appeared in last week's Functions release alongside other agent-focused improvements. Netlify has been vocal about optimizing its platform for AI-assisted development, recently launching AXIS, an open source framework to measure how well APIs work with AI agents.

The event handler update is live now for all Netlify Functions users. Existing functions using the old file-naming approach continue to work, but the company recommends migrating to named exports for better tooling support and code clarity. Documentation for the new handler interface is available on the Netlify docs site.
