Netlify Promotes AI Gateway for Building Custom Workflow-Specific Chatbots

Netlify is positioning its AI Gateway feature as a way for developers to build chatbots tailored to specific workflows and contexts, rather than relying on generic AI assistants.

In a LinkedIn post, Domitrius Clark explained that AI Gateway lets developers create custom AI experiences designed around how they actually work. The pitch centers on avoiding the friction of switching between tools or trying to force a generic assistant to understand specialized needs.

Gateway as Middleware

AI Gateway functions as an abstraction layer between a developer's application and multiple AI model providers. It handles authentication, caching, and routing to different models without requiring application code changes. This means developers can experiment with different models or switch providers without rewriting integration logic.

The feature integrates with Netlify's existing platform capabilities, including serverless functions and edge deployment. For teams already using Netlify for hosting and deployment, AI Gateway removes the need to set up separate infrastructure for AI functionality.

Custom Rules and Context

The emphasis on workflow-specific customization suggests AI Gateway supports configurable behavior beyond simple API proxying. Developers can define rules for how their chatbot interprets queries, what data sources it accesses, and how it formats responses. This matters for teams building internal tools where a generic assistant trained on public data won't understand company-specific terminology, processes, or constraints.

Netlify's platform handles the backend complexity, session management, and scaling, which typically requires significant infrastructure work when building AI features from scratch. The company has been expanding its AI capabilities over the past year, previously launching Agent Runners and Background Functions to support longer-running AI workflows.

Model Access and Platform Integration

AI Gateway provides access to multiple AI models through a single interface. This flexibility lets developers choose models based on cost, performance, or capability requirements for different parts of their application. A customer-facing chatbot might use a faster, cheaper model for simple queries while routing complex technical questions to a more capable model.

The integration with Netlify's deployment pipeline means AI features can be versioned, tested, and deployed using the same workflow as the rest of an application. Developers using Cursor can now access Netlify directly from the marketplace to streamline this process further.

Netlify published a guide on building real-time AI chatbots using Agent Runners without requiring backend infrastructure. The approach combines AI Gateway for model access with Agent Runners for execution, demonstrating how the pieces fit together in practice.

The company's recent infrastructure updates include removing the 4KB environment variable size limit for serverless functions, which previously caused deployment failures for teams managing multiple API keys and configuration values. This change removes a common friction point when integrating multiple AI services through AI Gateway.
