Netlify Launches Prompt Templates and Skills to Guide AI Agent Development

Netlify released two new resources designed to help developers and AI agents navigate the often murky second step of building web projects: prompt templates and skills.

The features address a common friction point. Getting an AI agent to generate a working prototype is straightforward. Knowing what to build next, and how to build it correctly on a specific platform, is not.

Prompt templates for repeatable workflows

Prompt templates are pre-written, focused instructions that handle common next-step tasks inside Netlify projects. Each template guides an AI agent through a specific workflow: adding email capture with Netlify Forms, building a chatbot using AI Gateway, wiring up authentication, or running SEO and accessibility checks.

Developers can use Netlify's library of templates, create custom ones for their teams, or contribute templates to the community. The goal is to turn ambiguous "what should I do next" moments into executable, repeatable actions.

The templates work alongside Netlify's existing deployment and function infrastructure. A developer or agent selects a template, runs it, and the platform handles the underlying configuration, whether that means provisioning a form endpoint or connecting to an AI model through the gateway.

Skills teach agents how Netlify works

Skills are context files that provide platform-specific knowledge to AI agents. Rather than letting agents guess at Netlify's conventions, folder structures, or configuration patterns, skills supply authoritative guidance on how to use the platform correctly.

This builds on Netlify's broader agent-focused strategy. The company positioned agent experience as a bridge from AI setup to production last month, and recently added support for OpenAI's GPT-5.5 Instant model with zero configuration through AI Gateway.

Skills complement prompt templates by answering the "how" while templates handle the "what." An agent working with a prompt template to add authentication, for instance, would reference a skill file to understand where to place Netlify Functions, how to structure redirects, or which environment variables to configure.

Together, the two features aim to reduce trial-and-error cycles. Agents spend less time debugging incorrect assumptions about how Netlify's deployment pipeline works and more time executing tasks that move a project forward.

Why this matters for AI-driven development

Netlify's move reflects a shift in how deployment platforms are adapting to AI-assisted workflows. Traditional documentation assumes a human reader who can interpret context and fill in gaps. AI agents need explicit, structured guidance to avoid making mistakes that seem obvious to experienced developers.

Prompt templates and skills formalize that guidance. They turn implicit platform knowledge into machine-readable instructions, which matters as more builders, especially those new to web development, rely on AI agents to handle technical implementation.

The announcement follows Netlify's integration with Stripe Projects, which enables one-prompt full-stack deployment, and the launch of Netlify Database with integrated Postgres support. All three features point toward a platform increasingly optimized for agent-driven workflows rather than manual configuration.

Developers can access prompt templates and skills through the Netlify dashboard or CLI. Custom templates can be stored in project repositories or shared with teams. The company has not yet detailed whether it plans to build a marketplace or rating system for community-contributed templates.
