Netlify Launches Kindling to Solve 'What to Build' Problem in Hot App Summer Challenge

Netlify has released Kindling, an idea generator designed to help developers overcome creative blocks during its Hot App Summer challenge. The tool generates ready-to-build app prompts that users can immediately deploy on the platform.

The app was built by Dana Lawson and addresses what Netlify identifies as "the hardest part of any challenge: knowing what to make." Users who are stuck on project ideas can visit Kindling, receive a prompt, and begin building without spending time on ideation.

From Concept to Deployment

Kindling fits into Netlify's broader push to reduce friction in the development pipeline. The tool generates project ideas that align with Netlify's deployment capabilities, letting participants move from "I don't know what to build" to active development in minutes. The initiative follows Netlify's expansion into Agent Runners and background functions, which focused on shortening the time from AI-assisted prompts to production-ready applications.

The Hot App Summer challenge encourages rapid prototyping and deployment. By embedding Kindling into the challenge, Netlify is betting that removing the ideation bottleneck will increase participation and completion rates. Participants can access Kindling directly through the challenge landing page, generate a prompt, and deploy to Netlify's platform without switching contexts.

Framework Support and Recent Updates

Netlify's infrastructure continues to expand its framework compatibility. The platform announced support for React Router 8 this week, which includes full serverless and edge function capabilities plus local development emulation. The update requires Node.js 22.22.0 or higher, React 19.2.7 or higher, and Vite 7 or higher. Developers can upgrade existing projects by following the React Router 8 migration guide and updating to version 4.0.0 or later of the Netlify React Router Vite plugin.

The platform also extended project labels to Pro plan users, a feature previously limited to Enterprise accounts. Team owners can now create and assign labels to organize projects by environment, purpose, or team, then filter projects from the team dashboard.

Building for Builders

Kindling represents what Netlify describes as "an app for building apps." The meta-application approach demonstrates how platforms can use their own tools to solve user friction points. Rather than publishing a blog post about overcoming creative blocks, Netlify shipped a functional tool that lives on its own infrastructure.

The Hot App Summer challenge is accessible through Netlify's main site, with Kindling available as a standalone resource. The initiative targets developers who have the technical skills to build but struggle with the initial creative spark. By generating structured prompts that map to common web application patterns, Kindling removes the blank-page problem that often delays new projects.

Developers interested in participating can access Kindling through the Hot App Summer landing page and join the challenge directly from the announcement. The tool is live and generating prompts for immediate use on the Netlify platform.
