Netlify Adds Claude Opus 4.8 Support to AI Gateway and Agent Runners

Zero-Config AI Model Access

Netlify announced support for Anthropic's Claude Opus 4.8 through its AI Gateway and Agent Runners, allowing developers to integrate the model into serverless functions without managing infrastructure. The update automatically handles API keys, authentication, caching, and rate limiting.

Developers can use the Anthropic SDK directly in Netlify Functions, following their recent focus on AI-native development. The AI Gateway removes the need to configure API credentials or build caching layers manually.

The implementation requires dropping the Anthropic SDK into any Netlify Function type or Agent Runner. According to the changelog entry, a basic integration looks like this:

import Anthropic from '@anthropic-ai/sdk';

export default async () => {
  const anthropic = new Anthropic();
  const response = await anthropic.messages.create({
    model: 'claude-opus-4-8',
    max_tokens: 4096,
    messages: [{
      role: 'user',
      content: 'How can AI improve my coding?'
    }]
  });
  return new Response(JSON.stringify(response), {
    headers: { 'Content-Type': 'application/json' }
  });
};

The update works across all Netlify Function types, including background functions and edge functions. Agent Runners, Netlify's framework for building AI agents, also gained immediate support.

Automatic Infrastructure Management

Netlify's AI Gateway abstracts away common pain points in AI development. The service manages API key storage, handles authentication flows, implements response caching to reduce costs, and enforces rate limits to prevent overages.

Developers don't need to set up environment variables for API keys or build custom caching layers. The AI Gateway intercepts SDK requests and applies infrastructure policies automatically, which reduces setup time for prototypes and production applications.

The caching layer is particularly relevant for applications with repeated queries. Netlify stores responses and serves them directly when the same prompt appears again, cutting API costs and improving response times.

Claude Opus 4.8 joins other models already available through the AI Gateway, including Google's Gemini 3.5 Flash. Netlify has been expanding its AI offerings throughout 2026, including database integrations and agent-building tools designed for AI-first workflows.

The update is available immediately to all Netlify users through existing Function deployments. Full documentation is available in the AI Gateway docs and Agent Runners guides.
