Netlify Adds clarifying questions in Agent Runners Before Builds Begin

A vague prompt no longer has to send Netlify’s AI straight into a potentially misguided build. The deployment platform has added clarifying questions in Agent Runners, giving agents a chance to resolve missing requirements before generating and deploying an application.

The feature, announced in an official blog post, is intended to improve first-pass results while reducing the time, credits and repeated prompting spent correcting an agent’s assumptions. It became available on August 19, 2026.

Agent Runners already provide a route from a written idea to a deployed application without requiring users to configure a local development environment or handle deployment separately. That speed creates a familiar problem, however. If an initial prompt leaves out key decisions, immediately generating code can be less useful than pausing to ask what the user actually needs.

Questions Before Code

Netlify illustrates the issue with a deliberately broad request: “Build a tracker dashboard.” That prompt does not specify whether the application should track habits, customer feedback or another type of data. Previously, the agent had to make those product decisions itself. It can now present a lightweight set of questions when additional information would materially improve the result.

Users can answer only the questions that matter to them, skip individual questions or bypass the entire set. They can also add free-form context alongside their selected answers. If questions are skipped, the agent proceeds using its own judgment, so the interaction does not become a mandatory requirements form.

That flexibility is important for small teams and solo builders. A founder may care deeply about the audience, visual direction and core workflow while being comfortable letting the agent choose implementation details. Someone creating an internal tool might instead specify data structure and permissions but leave the interface open-ended.

Netlify says its testing found that even a few quick answers could make the first build substantially sharper. The company has not published quantitative benchmarks, so the size of that improvement will depend on the prompt and project. Still, the underlying trade-off is straightforward: a short planning exchange can be cheaper than generating the wrong application and rebuilding it through several follow-up runs.

Why This Changes the Agent Workflow

The update nudges Agent Runners away from treating every prompt as a complete specification. It also makes the system behave more like a developer or product consultant, identifying ambiguity before committing resources to implementation.

For builders, the practical benefits are likely to be clearest in prompts that omit one or more of the following:

  • Purpose, including what the application should help users accomplish
  • Audience, such as customers, staff or a public community
  • Data and workflows, including what should be captured, displayed or updated
  • Product preferences, where multiple reasonable interpretations are possible

Highly detailed prompts may not need the new interaction. Netlify says agents ask only when more information could materially improve the result, rather than inserting a questionnaire before every run.

The launch also fits Netlify’s broader effort to make Agent Runners more useful across the planning and production process. It follows the company’s introduction of Ask mode, which lets users consult an agent before making changes, and arrives as Netlify expands the model choices behind its AI tooling, including open-model support for production workflows.

For NoCode and AI-assisted builders, the most meaningful change is not another generation capability. It is a checkpoint. By letting an agent acknowledge uncertainty, Netlify is trying to make the path from idea to deployed software less dependent on users writing a perfect first prompt.

Frequently asked questions

What is Netlify clarifying questions in Agent Runners?

It is a feature that allows Netlify Agent Runners to ask users for missing details before building an application. The agent can use those answers to make its initial output more relevant instead of guessing about important requirements.

Do users have to answer every clarifying question?

No. Users can answer selected questions, skip one or all of them, and provide additional context in their own words. When a question is skipped, the agent can make the decision itself and continue.

When are clarifying questions in Agent Runners available?

Netlify announced the feature as available on August 19, 2026. The supplied announcement does not identify a separate rollout schedule or specify a plan requirement for this particular capability.
