Intercom Ships 12 Updates to Procedures and Simulations for End-to-End Automation

Intercom announced 12 updates to its Procedures and Simulations capabilities last week, expanding what its AI agent Fin can handle without human intervention. The company demonstrated the new features through a three-minute walkthrough showing how Fin can now process a subscription downgrade request from start to finish, including steps that span multiple external systems.

The demo, shared by Intercom's team, highlights a workflow that most support teams currently resolve manually. A customer requests a downgrade, which triggers actions across billing systems, account management tools, and notification platforms. Traditionally, this requires a support agent to coordinate each step. With the updated Procedures, Fin executes the entire sequence autonomously.

Building Multi-Step Workflows

Procedures allow teams to define complex, branching workflows that Fin follows to resolve customer requests. The subscription downgrade example involves verifying the customer's current plan, checking for active subscriptions or commitments, processing the downgrade through a billing API, updating internal records, and confirming the change with the customer.

Intercom's updates focus on expanding the range of actions Fin can perform and improving how it handles dependencies between steps. When a procedure requires data from one system before proceeding to the next, Fin now manages those handoffs more reliably.

The company has been building toward more autonomous AI agents since unveiling Intercom 2 with 60+ updates for AI-first customer support. Procedures represent a shift from AI answering questions to AI taking action.

Testing Before Deployment

Simulations, which received updates alongside Procedures, let teams test workflows before deploying them to customers. Support leaders can run scenarios to see how Fin handles edge cases, like a customer requesting a downgrade mid-billing cycle or attempting to move to a plan that doesn't exist.

This testing layer addresses a common concern with autonomous AI: how to ensure it handles exceptions correctly. By simulating hundreds of variations, teams can identify gaps in their procedures and refine the logic before going live.

Intercom has positioned Fin as an AI agent capable of handling more than simple Q&A. Following the introduction of Fin for Sales, the company is expanding Fin's role across different business functions. Procedures extend that capability by letting Fin act on behalf of customers, not just inform them.

Implications for Support Teams

The updates matter because they target workflows that consume significant support team time but don't require complex judgment. A subscription downgrade is straightforward once you know the customer's current state and the target plan. The challenge is coordinating the steps across systems, not deciding whether to approve the request.

By automating these processes, Intercom argues teams can focus on interactions that require empathy, negotiation, or creative problem-solving. The company's bet is that AI agents handle the procedural work faster and more consistently than humans toggling between tools.

Intercom has not disclosed which of the 12 updates apply to Procedures versus Simulations, or whether they include new integrations, expanded API support, or improvements to error handling. The LinkedIn post focused on the downgrade demo rather than enumerating changes.

The full video walkthrough, linked in the post's comments, provides additional detail on building and deploying procedures. Intercom continues to refine Fin's capabilities as more companies adopt AI agents for customer-facing workflows.
