Anthropic is transferring ownership of the Model Context Protocol to the Linux Foundation, one year after launching the open standard that has become a critical piece of infrastructure for AI applications connecting to external systems.
The protocol will anchor the newly formed Agentic AI Foundation, a directed fund established by Anthropic alongside OpenAI, Block, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Cloudflare, and Bloomberg. The move positions MCP as a vendor-neutral standard governed by the open source community rather than a single company.
Rapid Adoption Across AI Platforms
Since its launch in late 2023, MCP has achieved notable traction. The protocol now supports over 10,000 active servers and generates 97 million monthly SDK downloads. Most major AI platforms have implemented client support, making it a de facto standard for connecting AI models to databases, APIs, and other external tools.
The protocol addresses a fundamental challenge in AI development: giving models secure, structured access to external data without building custom integrations for every possible combination of AI system and data source. Developers write MCP servers once, and any MCP-compatible AI application can connect to them.
Industry Coalition Backs Foundation
The Agentic AI Foundation represents an unusual alignment of competing AI companies around shared infrastructure. The founding members include direct competitors in the large language model space, all contributing to govern a protocol that underpins their respective platforms.
By moving MCP to the Linux Foundation, Anthropic follows a pattern established by other open source projects seeking long-term sustainability and broad industry acceptance. The Linux Foundation's governance model separates project development from any single vendor's commercial interests.
Anthropics states it will continue investing in MCP development alongside the community, though operational control now rests with the foundation. This structure mirrors how other AI platforms have approached standardization, particularly as agentic AI systems require reliable protocols for tool use and data access.
The timing coincides with growing enterprise adoption of AI agents. Companies integrating Claude and similar systems need standardized ways to connect these tools to internal databases, CRMs, and workflow systems. MCP provides that standardization layer.
What This Means for Developers
For developers building on MCP, the transition should prove transparent. The protocol specification remains open source, and existing integrations continue to function. The foundation structure may accelerate feature development by pooling resources from multiple contributing companies.
The foundation's roadmap has not been detailed, but industry observers expect focus on security hardening, performance optimization, and expanding the protocol to support emerging agentic AI capabilities. With backing from companies that collectively serve hundreds of millions of users, MCP infrastructure investments should increase substantially.
The announcement positions MCP alongside other foundational open source projects in the Linux Foundation portfolio. Whether it achieves similar ubiquity to protocols like Kubernetes or CNCF projects remains to be seen, but the vendor coalition and existing adoption provide a strong foundation.
