AI for the Working Mathematician

Edinburgh · ICMS, Bayes Centre

Hosted by International Centre for Mathematical Sciences

AI for the Working Mathematician is a three-day ICMS workshop in Edinburgh, running 14–16 December 2026 at the Bayes Centre. It will examine how AI is changing mathematical research, from automated theorem proving and formalisation to conjecture generation and the analysis of large mathematical datasets. Mathematics meets artificial intelligence Recent foundation models have produced powerful systems for mathematical reasoning, while machine learning is revealing previously hidden structures in mathematical data, including phenomena such as elliptic curve murmurations. This workshop creates a focused setting in which academic and industry researchers can evaluate these advances, demonstrate emerging technologies and discuss where current methods still fall short. The programme will explore areas including: - Theorem proving and AI-assisted mathematical reasoning - Automated formalisation using proof assistants such as Lean - AI-supported conjecture generation - Machine learning for large mathematical datasets - Tools for scientific discovery, including DeepMind’s AlphaEvolve and Axiom Maths’ Axolver and Axplorer - The opportunities and limitations of current AI systems for mathematics Talks and collaborative working groups Alongside invited talks, attendees will take part in specialist working groups addressing technical challenges and collaborative projects. Work, Automation, and AI

Southampton + online · University of Southampton, Avenue Campus

Hosted by Charlotte Franziska Unruh

A hybrid University of Southampton workshop examining how AI and automation are reshaping work, worker wellbeing and the meaning of working life. Work, automation and ethics Taking place on Tuesday 15 December 2026 at the University of Southampton’s Avenue Campus, with an option to attend online, this workshop approaches workplace AI as an ethical and social challenge, not simply a technical development. It will consider what happens as AI takes over tasks, optimises workflows and changes the relationship between workers, employers and the wider economy. The programme centres on difficult questions raised by increasingly automated workplaces: - Are there distinctive harms or “bads” associated with automated working environments? - How should people live in a world where AI can replace most, or potentially all, tasks? - Could AI make work less meaningful? - What do changing workflows mean for workers and the economy? Rather than focusing on a particular software platform, the workshop creates space for philosophical examination of automation’s consequences. It should be particularly relevant to researchers, students and practitioners interested in the ethics of AI, the philosophy of work, technology’s impact on workers, and the future organisation of economic life. No specific experience level or technical prerequisite is listed. Speakers and format The workshop brings together speakers from universities in the UK, Ireland and Germany: - Markus Rüther, University of Juelich / University of Bonn - Charlotte Unruh, University of Southampton - John Danaher, University of Galway - Rosalie Waelen, Goethe University Frankfurt The hybrid format allows participants to attend either in person in Southampton or remotely. Organised by Charlotte Franziska Unruh, the event offers an academically grounded setting in which to examine not only what workplace AI can do, but how its use may affect human agency, meaningful activity and working conditions. Registration Registration is required. Attendees must email the organiser by Tuesday 8 December 2026, clearly stating whether they plan to participate in person or online. The event listing gives a registration deadline of 9:00am; RSVPing through PhilEvents alone is not sufficient to register. View the event and registration details

The AI Agent Conference in Fort Lauderdale (February 9-11, 2027) brings together legal experts, technologists, and business leaders to tackle one of the most pressing questions in AI development: As AI agents evolve from passive tools into autonomous decision-makers, who is legally responsible when things go wrong? This three-day event delivers critical insights into the regulatory, liability, and privacy challenges reshaping how enterprises deploy agentic AI systems. Why Attend As states across the U.S. draft new AI regulations and privacy laws, businesses adopting AI agents face unprecedented legal uncertainty. If an autonomous agent causes harm—whether through biased decisions, data breaches, or operational failures—existing legal frameworks struggle to assign accountability. This conference addresses these challenges head-on, equipping attendees with the knowledge to navigate the complex intersection of AI innovation and regulatory compliance. Featured Sessions The conference kicks off Tuesday, February 10 with the opening panel "AI Agents on Trial: Navigating Regulation, Liability, and Privacy in the Age of Agentic AI" (10:00-10:45am). Legal experts and technology leaders will explore critical questions: Should developers, enterprise adopters, or the AI systems themselves bear responsibility for autonomous agent actions? How do emerging state-level regulations impact AI deployment strategies? What privacy protections must be built into agentic systems from the ground up? Beyond the main sessions, the conference offers unique professional development opportunities. The Coaching Café workshop provides personalized guidance on AI strategy and implementation. The exhibit hall (open Wednesday 12pm-5pm and Thursday 10am-3pm) showcases cutting-edge AI agent platforms and tools. Who Should Attend This event is essential for legal counsel advising on AI deployments, compliance officers managing regulatory risk, CTOs and AI architects building autonomous systems, product managers integrating AI agents, and business leaders making strategic AI investment decisions. Whether you're implementing ChatGPT-powered customer service agents, deploying Claude for document processing, or building custom automation with n8n or Make, understanding the legal landscape is non-negotiable. Glasgow · Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow

Hosted by IES - a multi-disciplinary engineering institution

Explore how artificial intelligence is transforming SETI at this one-hour talk with astrophysicist Professor Michael Garrett in Glasgow on 9 March 2027. Searching for signs of technological life Do advanced technological civilisations exist elsewhere in our Galaxy, and, if so, how might we detect them? This in-person presentation examines one of astronomy’s biggest questions through the emerging science of technosignatures: observable evidence that could point to the presence of technology created by a distant civilisation. Professor Michael Garrett will discuss the latest developments in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), with particular attention to signatures associated with energy-intensive extraterrestrial civilisations. The talk will explain how recent technical advances, especially artificial intelligence, are changing researchers’ ability to identify and assess potential signals across vast astronomical datasets. The session will cover: - The scientific search for advanced civilisations in the Galaxy - What astronomers mean by potential “technosignatures” - How energy use could reveal the presence of distant technology - The role of AI in improving the detection of unusual or promising signals - Recent developments in SETI and radio astronomy About the speaker Professor Michael Garrett FRS is the Sir Bernard Lovell Chair of Astrophysics at the University of Manchester and Special Professor of Radio Astronomy at Leiden University. His research perspective places the discussion at the intersection of astrophysics, radio astronomy, artificial intelligence and the search for life beyond Earth. The event is organised by IES – a multi-disciplinary engineering institution. It should appeal to people interested in AI, engineering, astronomy, space science and the practical application of advanced technology to fundamental scientific questions. No prerequisites or required experience level are specified on the event page.
