Perplexity announced that Claude Sonnet 5 is now available to Pro and Max subscribers, expanding the AI models users can choose from when querying the answer engine.
The new model can be selected both as a standard response engine and as an orchestrator model in Perplexity's Computer feature, according to a LinkedIn post from the company. The orchestrator role allows Claude Sonnet 5 to coordinate workflows and manage multi-step tasks within Computer, Perplexity's more advanced workspace environment.
Model Rotation Continues
This marks the latest in a series of model updates to Perplexity's Computer feature. The company has cycled through several Claude variants in recent months. Just weeks ago, Perplexity restored Claude Fable 5 as an orchestrator model after previously adding it as an option. The frequent model swaps suggest Perplexity is actively testing which Claude versions perform best for different use cases.
Claude Sonnet 5, Anthropic's latest mid-tier model, balances speed and capability. It sits between the faster Claude Haiku and the more powerful Claude Opus in Anthropic's model hierarchy. For Perplexity users, this means another option when choosing how to handle research queries and complex workflows.
What the Orchestrator Role Means
The orchestrator designation is significant. Rather than simply answering queries, an orchestrator model in Computer can break down multi-step requests, delegate subtasks, and synthesize results. Perplexity has been building out Computer as a more advanced interface, integrating features like Deep Research and Brain memory systems to handle complex, context-heavy workflows.
For Pro and Max subscribers who rely on Computer for research, document analysis, or legal work (the company recently launched Computer for Counsel), the addition of Claude Sonnet 5 as an orchestrator gives another lever to pull when configuring how tasks get handled.
Competitive Context
Perplexity's model flexibility contrasts with competitors like ChatGPT, where users on paid plans access OpenAI's models but have less control over which model handles orchestration versus execution. By letting users select orchestrator models explicitly, Perplexity is positioning Computer as a power-user tool for people who understand the trade-offs between different AI models.
The update is available now to Pro and Max subscribers. Free users continue to access Perplexity's standard model selection, which does not include Computer features or orchestrator options.
